I think this video says it all. It explains exactly how we've all (the citizens) been screwed many times over.

I liked the explanation about the "two tiered investment system" - Which was the insiders who knew the real numbers, and the investors who were told they were going to get high payouts which everyone on the inside knew was impossible.
