You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out.

Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?

Delay: it's the truth.

Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?

Delay: well, it is the truth. and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.

What is wrong with this guy? He better hope he is not running for re-election or he might not like the results. Then again there are alot of people who thing the same way as this nutjob.

He's not the only Republican to make that boneheaded statement.

Can't remember who else it was, but it seems they are all reading from the same playbook, whenever they get time on-camera.

Although it is true that some will gladly sit back and suck at the governmental teet for awhile, especially after being rejected day after day and taking a break, being on unemployment puts a person from a comfortable wage to barely surviving. Scratching out an existance is hardly a preferred lifestyle, and if this guy believes that survival = happiness, then perhaps he should spend a couple months dealing with what someone on unemployment has to deal with...no backup funds, no healthcare unless he is going to pay, etc.

These socialist workers always have a silver spoon view of how the plebs work...they never worry about healthcare because they are on the government socialist public option as all government employees are...they dont have to worry about money because they get paid far more than they are worth...they dont have to worry about vacations or time off because they barely work to begin with...they are simply the rich being distainful for anyone not of their status.

thats how all politicians are frankly, but some do remember where their votes are coming from...so they cater to those.

What about those ineligible for unemployment compensation? I suppose the 100+ resumes I send out on a monthly basis are a good estimate of how much I "don't want to work".

This guy is an idiot. While I'll admit there are those out there who are milking unemployment for everything it is worth, I can also say that there are plenty more who are legitimately trying to make a living but cannot do so.

This is sad. Moron.

I do however like the concept of "governmental workforce for unemployment extension"....where after a certain time, to continue collecting your unemployment check, you sign up for like 25 hours a week of local working...be it filing, street sweeping, or some other city improvement task. You choose from a list of activities and what timeframe suits you best, along with your skillset and any handicap you work with...and voila. you got a semi-crappy job until you find something better. The city wins, the person wins, the extensions are justified easily, etc..

I am sure there is a flaw here...but its a start anyhow.

I would LOVE to have a one-on-one discussion with Congressman Delay on this matter. I have sent over 300 resumes, have been called for only 4 interviews and have received NO offers. I do NOT wish to be unemployed. My friends and family who are unemployed also do NOT wish to be unemployed. In fact, a few of those are losing their homes because of their unemployment. So, by default, asshat is saying that people want to be unemployed, want to lose their homes, want their credit destroyed, and DO NOT want to provide for their families.

Is this guy serious??? It's a good thing he dropped out of politics because comments like that would sink him! Maybe he should just stick to illegal campaign contributions, money laundering, illegal lobbying, gerrymandering etc... What a complete POS!!!

Its true though, people is lazy, time for them to grow up and make a something of there
lives. Create a business and opportunity will come nocking, instead they need the big baby sitter to give them money for being lazy. Grow vegetables and cattles, make your own stream and get a generator. I agree with Tom, they want to be unemployed because it is easy and nice to sit around all day watching the view.

There speaks the voice of true ignorance. It is patently obvious that you have not been through this very traumatic and harassing experience otherwise you just would not say that.

CLUELESS!!!
Based on your grammar usage and word choices, I would believe that your comments are spoken like a true welfare lifer!

How do I create my own stream and how do I buy a generator when I'M BROKE!!! Cattle? At at least $2500 a head, how in the f*ck do I do that? Then where do I put them?

I have over 20 years experience as an executive level manager in sales & marketing and a history of earning over 6 figures. Those jobs are GONE! And your solution is to make my own stream??? Methinks you haven't cleared 6th grade yet!

Mmmm...who taught you how to spell?

In the early 1990's I was unemployed for a year and a half...not because I wanted to be but where I was living through king george the 1st's recession there were no jobs. After unemployment (which was half of my previous job's income) ran out I had to do workfare for the city and part of it was to go around and apply for jobs and ya just knew when you pulled out the city's verification form...even if there was a job...they weren't gonna hire you.

I know a lot of hard working people who are struggling and suffering with no work who would tell delay and those dim enough to agree with that arrogant fool...to sit on it and rotate.

the local businesses will go bankrupt as they cannot compete with low paid workers on benefits, which means less city revenues and higher unemployment, leading to more low wage workers on benefits, more foreclosures, leading to more failed businesses leading to more unemployment etc........

Let's look at what government means to the average person:

More paperwork than ever before. To get a house built, a business established, or even deal with the death of a family member, we must navigate a vast bureaucracy. Inevitably this means paying experts and lawyers.

Government views us as a cash cow. Fees have gone up, and practices like the creation of de facto speed traps have continued to drain citizens, without any regard for whether these people are contributing members of society who need a break, or repeat lawbreakers.

In addition to hiring legions of consultants and contractors, most of whom get placed at the front of the line for being minority- or female-owned, government has surged in size and pay for bureaucrats, even as efficiency has declined.

The rise in bureaucracy and tendency to hand it over to people without considering their competence has created a culture of corruption that "threatens the fabric of the US", according to the FBI. It even reaches the White House.

Government now operates in "moral" humanistic mode, which means that it supports any idea no matter how impractical which endorses our holy trinity of secular humanity -- equality, diversity and freedom -- while ignoring the consequences. As a result, we now have legions of diversity consultants, counselors, educators, presenters and other nonsense "make-work" bureaucrats.

Having this many relatively incompetent but highly paid people causes them to seek to justify their position by publicly enforcing laws rabidly, and starting all sorts of new and pointless programs. The origin of the Nanny State is not an Orwellian desire for control by the state, but a desire by incompetent individuals to justify their salaries.

No matter how we cut it, this means government has become a parasite. It takes from the productive, and gives to the unproductive. Even if we object to measuring life through money, we have to recognize that rewarding the good means that they have an incentive to outperform others. It's that incentive that is the foundation of evolution and natural selection as well as any healthy society.
