This is going to be a terrible tragedy. Port au Prince has a population of 2 million people, and the quake hit it just about head on, at only 6 miles deep. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has very poor building standards, with extensive shanty towns.

There are already reports that a hospital has collapsed. Please keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts.

Aftershocks so far:

5.5 2010/01/12 22:12:05 18.485 -72.556 10.0 HAITI REGION
5.9 2010/01/12 22:00:42 18.271 -72.862 10.0 HAITI REGION
