Woman in found baby case charged

www.freep.com

A 22-year-old Garden City woman was arraigned Wednesday on an attempted murder charge after investigators say she gave birth to a baby girl and left her in a trash bin last month.

A group of teen girls discovered the 7-pound, 4-ounce infant about five hours after police say Desiree A. Walker left her in the garbage container in a parking lot in the Cherry Hill and Middlebelt area in Garden City on Nov. 20. The infant survived and is in good condition.

Walker could face life in prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

What is wrong with people? Michigan has that safe haven law, where you can drop off an unwanted child at a police station, fire station or hospital without penalty or charge, what reason could this lady possibly have for putting this child in the trash can?

This is one of those stories that make me hate humanity.

Postpartum depression perhaps? It still doesn't justify murder. Someone who wants to care for a child will gladly accept the gift.

With all of the ways that the child could have been cared for, the only thing that I can think is that she indeed had a mental breakdown of some sort.

I actually feel sorry for her as it is just human nature for a mother to care for her child, and somewhere her wires were severely crossed. A very thorough psychological assessment might reveal more than what is in the news article.

Then again, she just might be one of those that do not have a conscience at all and therefore in my opinion, should be charged with the offence as it would be sure to happen again in one form or another.

Either way, the girl needs some real help, and I am glad that the child will at least survive, hopefully in a loving home.

I am glad the infant is ok and is now being taken care of. I still don't understand why she didn't take the child to the police or a fire station. She wouldn't have gotten in trouble at all had she given the child up like that.

The Safe Haven law is probably one of the best ideas that society has come up with. Instead of dumping a child in a dumpster, a person can legally surrender an unwanted child to the authorities and the child will be safe.
