Report: Iran has A-bomb know-how

Staff at the International Atomic Energy Agency have written a confidential analysis conveying that Iran has "sufficient information to be able to design and produce a workable" atom bomb, the New York Times says.

The report, which gave unnamed European officials as sources, was posted on the newspaper's website late on Saturday, after Mohamed ElBaradei, the IAEA chief, arrived in Iran for talks on nuclear inspections.

LONDON (AP) — World stock markets fell Friday ahead of a key U.S. jobs report due later in the day, which some fear could show unemployment nearing 10 percent rate in the world's largest economy.



Germany's DAX was down 0.5 percent at 5,525.21, Britain's FTSE 100 lost 0.5 percent to 5,021.93 and France's CAC-40 was 1.1 percent lower at 3,679.70.



Major Asian indexes in Japan and Hong Kong dropped around 2 percent or more and Wall Street was expected to open lower. Dow Jones industrials futures were down 22 points at 9,449.00 while Standard & Poor's 500 futures were 1.40 points lower at 1,026.00.



Markets fell into a bad mood on Thursday, when weekly jobless claims and monthly manufacturing data in the U.S. came in far worse than expected, raising fears that the total payrolls number for September will also be weak.

The Invasion of Iraq was planned way back in the early 90's. War with Iran has been planned for as long or longer. Times up. The world needs a good war right now unfortunately. No matter what happens even if it's simply Israel or the US dropping a few bombs on these supposed nuclear weapons sites it will wreak havoc in the middle east. There are a myriad of repercussions that could stem from such an attack. The US economy is faltering and the worse it gets the more desperate our government is getting at propping it up. We need a bailout more than we did the first time around and we may not get it, let's face it our country is broke as a joke. What's funn about this whole situation??????????? Millions of Americans have their friggin heads buried in the sand as usual......too busy worrying about who David Letterman is sleeping with and which star is going to get roasted by Bruno.

The war drums are getting louder and louder with each day. War with Iran could have dire implications for the World economy, if there is a hiccup in the oil market as a result of a strike on Iran. Their close proximity to the Straight of Hormuz is what scares the beejesus out of me. I understand that transit through that geographic bottleneck is quite risky, even at peacetime. I was in the Navy and every time our ship transited through that narrow pass, we had to be at the ready; manning our battle stations and at general quarters throughout passage. Attempts to sink naval ships have happened in the past.

On April 14, the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts struck a mine while deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Earnest Will, the 1987-88 convoy missions in which U.S. warships escorted reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers to protect them from Iranian attacks. The explosion opened a 25-foot hole in the Roberts's hull and nearly sank it. The crew saved their ship with no loss of life, and Roberts was towed to Dubai on April 16.

What's to stop Iran from closing off the straight by filling it up with debris because of how shallow it is, if I'm correct, or riddling it with sea mines as far as the eye can see. It will make navigation nearly impossible. With that scenario, it will cause an extreme disruption to the faucet. Plus, if the US Navy goes in there it will be a virtual shooting gallery between naval ships and the Iranian's on the coast. Either way, it is an achille's heal for the World economy, which is already teetering on the brink. So, hopefully, a little patience is in order by the US and Israel. A knee-jerk response would be devastating for the entire world.

Oh yes, that time is drawing near. I would put a pretty big wager on iran being attacked by the end of the year.

What's the big deal here? Any good Physics student could design an atomic bomb. Anybody remember the kid from Princton in the late 70's? Given access to a good technical library I could probably do it. The hard part is obtaining the nuclear materials and designing a bomb small enough to put on a missle.

You are correct - it is relatively easy to make a fission bomb. The 'knowledge' is in creating the centrifuge cascade capable of creating the fissile material of the required quality.

This knowledge was gained/stolen by a Pakistani employed in Holland by a nuclear agency who then sold it on to the highest bidder.
