Mexican legislative candidate, family killed

www.cnn.com

A legislative candidate was killed, along with his wife and two children, bringing campaigns for statewide offices in the southeastern state of Tabasco to a halt, the state-run news agency Notimex reported.

...

As of Sunday, authorities had not released a motive for the crime, though speculation of a drug cartel hit or a robbery circulated in Tabasco.

Wow....

Holy crap.... I don't even understand how Mexico even functions these days. I swear, the tactics of the drug cartels are SO SIMILAR to those of the gangsters in this country during prohibition...

But with this one... just a bit more brazen...

What is to stop them from completely taking over Mexico overtly? You kill a candidates family, it's not to far from that to offing holders of major political office!

Good way to get rid of your political enemy is to blame it on the cartels.

As a matter of fact, you could probably get rid of anybody you want and get away with it by blaming it on the cartels.

Sad to hear about the kids.

Well, given the actual cartel violence, this isn't too far a stretch... although I will agree it's a first as far as I know... and more brazen than what I have seen up til now, so there is, as you mentioned, still room for doubt.

Mexico is irreparably corrupt. Taking southern border security seriously is long overdue.

Have you ever been to Mexico? There are a few places that aren't ingrained in the drug trafficking, but on the whole, Mexico is owned by the cartels.

The resources of Mexico are bountiful, despite what people believe. The whole place isn't a desert, and if it were, the technology we have today could irrigate the entire country. It would be a simple matter to turn the place into agricultural heaven.

But Mexico is poor and destitute. Because they are kept that way. The only benefit to having a poor population would be to sell them hope and drugs because those are the only two things that will keep them going.

Eventually, Mexicans will rebel. But they aren't ready for that, yet. There must be a spark to ignite the flame, and from what I've seen while visiting, the flame will become a wildfire and consume everything within the borders of that country and a long way past. It is their fight and they will rise up for it. When they are ready.

They are now saying that theft is the motive:

Robbery cited as motive for killing of Mexican candidate, family

Mexican officials say the theft of cash, computers and other household goods was the motive for the weekend slayings of a legislative candidate, his wife and two children, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

This sounds suspicious to me:

The juvenile suspect conceived and planned out the crime, authorities said. The 18-year-old, identified as Ricardo Hernandez Rodriguez, worked as an overnight security guard in the neighborhood where Fuentes and his family lived, officials said. Police said they found incriminating receipts in a pocket of Hernandez's pants, which he left at the guard station. According to officials, Hernandez bought ski masks, duct tape and T-shirts at a local store.

The criminals used the duct tape to bind the two children after breaking into the house, Notimex said.

Officials say the suspects then killed the candidate and his wife before loading computers, cell phones, cash, video games and other goods into a vehicle described as a Hummer and driving away. Authorities found the vehicle abandoned at a nearby park. Inside the Hummer, police found a handgun and ski masks.

Police found incriminating receipts in his pants pocket that he conveniently left at the police station. Hmmm...

All the other politicians are calling offering condolences. How nice...

He did confess though:

Hernandez said in a videotaped statement that "everything went out of control" and that he did not mean to kill the family, Notimex said.

Just doesn't sound or feel right to me.

1810 Mexican Independence, 1910 Mexican Revolution... so 2010 is the date something must happen here

Unless we do the smart thing and end prohibition again.

But yep, the only other alternative is what you painted.

Not to surprised... did you know that Ciudad Juarez's (Just across the bridge from El Paso Texas), rising murder rate, currently at about 250 per month, makes it the world's most violent city?

Those of us who live on the border states have one fear, that if their government does collapse we would be over run with ten if not hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the violence
