Thought I'd post a video, something people would like, need to see.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…

I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….

You’re not as fat as you
imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum.

The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you

Sing!

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.

Floss!

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…

the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own..

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard;

live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you.

Maybe you have a trust fund,

maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it.

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Just a friendly reminder for those, getting out of high school, college, junior high, or wherever.

The message is good, sharp, and insightful.

Love this song...and the gems of wisdom within it.

I volunteer at a local Youth Centre for disadvantaged/troubled Teenagers.
You know the kind...always in trouble with the law, caught up in gangs, drugs etc etc

...a group of us take them out tramping, hunting, fishing, play sports...teach them life skills, coping techniques, education etc...

...this song is the song I play right at the start of the year, when we have a new group starting...

Oh really!

I found it one day randomly a while back.

It's always playing in the back of my mind, I don't know why, but it just sticks to you, unbelievably so!

I worked as a counselor for molested youth a year or two ago, it became to much, but that's the closest i've come to really having an effect on someone. Although I did on one person.

I think what the youth your talking about are PC "At Risk Youth". No?

I don't think anyone can hear this mans words, and not feel touched, i'm as cold hearted as they come, and I can't help but stop in my tracks, and throw my silly insecurities away and listen to them.

Brilliant.

Good for you alien, doing good for people!

I don't want to be like you more Carl sagan, with a bit of zaz, and all the others, but, good to see your making a difference in the entire world. Butterfly effect. Remember each person you've helped, paid it forward one way or another.

Good on you as well for giving of yourself to others.

What I love about that Youth Centre is that its staffed by mainly volunteers...people who aren't in it for the money - but because they genuinely want to make a difference in some way.

Its Staffed by teachers, counsellors, Nurses and clincians etc such as myself, ex-gang members, ex-druggies etc...most of us have been there in some shape or form as well - so the kids know we're not there without a clue or to lecture or preach...but rather to offer them some hope, some love and maybe a little bit of benefit gained from walking it as well.

Its a pretty harsh world these kids are growing up in no doubt.
While some of us are worrying about our next credit card payment, or that nice big-screen LCD we want or whatever...these kids are worrying about where their next meal is coming from, or if its safe to go home (IF they have a home to speak of) that night...

...really puts things in perspective...

Peace.

I went for it, for the money at first, and at my age, I was damned if I didn't take it, I had the knowledge and everything.

I went, working night shifts at a At Risk Youth Centre.

Thought it'd be easy, but, kids don't sleep. I talked and did all the stuff the daytime people did.

12 hour shifts, with these guys. (girls had girl counselors.).

I'd hear there stories, and lives. Go through the books of their history. And just sitting there, in a facepalm sort of way, wondering WTF!? Happened, where is humanity in all this, and die a little each day, then I stopped sleeping for weeks at a time, till I passed out, only to wake in nightmares experiencing a blink of what they experienced.

It still haunts me to this day. I can't stop thinking of them.

It takes a certain person to do that job, and obviously i'm not a person for it, especially not strong enough. It takes a metal for it.

I worry about my crappy car, but remembering, always brings about a 'get the f over it' attitude, that is a breathe of fresh air.

I wouldn't take it back, but at times I wish I could, be ignorant of all that, but it's real, and I have to accept it.

I remember the kids, running away. Only to come back a day or two at most later, Realizing they had nowhere to go, which I can only IMAGINE, must be the most awful feeling, that the thing your running from, is all that you've got.

It changed my life, and I still try to block it out, along with a ton of other things...

Wow. That was VERY insightful and inspirational. Honestly it made me step back and reflect on my life, and realize how right you really are.

Great post

I hear ya.

My 'day job' is within Mental Health. Has been for many many years.

I work with both Child/Adolescent Teams and also Adult Teams...but its the kids who get referred to our Psych Teams and Unit that tear me up.

Reading through some of these kids files, digging into what has brought them to such a place in life as to be referred on to a Psych team...man...reading those files its no wonder these kids are messed up. Who wouldn't be with even half of what these kids have experienced - abuse, ALL forms, in the extreme...just mind-numbing stuff...

Seriously - some people need to be shot. But even that wouldn't be good enough for those perpetrators...sickening...

I didn't bother reading the whole post because sunscreen causes cancer, so no i will not put that crap on my body. IF YOU CANT EAT IT DON'T PUT IT ON YOUR BODY, that should be common sense.

well you can just ignore all the other pearls of wisdom there too?
This track was released in the UK charts in 1998, I think in may have got to number 1, maybe wrong. Anyway it seems like most ignore all the advice in the song, especially the sunscreen bit.

your more likely getting cancer if you dont wear sunscreen

The advice was good except for one thing...
Did you know that sunscreen causes cancer? Just thought I'd throw that out there for fun.

Not wearing sunscreen causes cancer, too.

I guess it's best to pick which type of cancer you want.
