Circling the Earth every 90 minutes, [the ISS] often passes over North America and is visible from the ground when night has fallen but the station, up high, is still bathed in sunlight.

After more than a decade of construction, it is nearing completion and finally has a full crew of six astronauts. The last components should be installed by the end of next year.

And then?

"In the first quarter of 2016, we'll prep and de-orbit the spacecraft"

I searched and could not find this topic elsewhere, so forgive me if this is a repeat.

I heard about this last week, and couldn't believe my ears. Why would we waste all of this previous time and effort on something we were just going to shoot down in the end? I figured we would use it as a 'mid-point' to the moon until we have a base established there. This just baffles me. Anyone else's thoughts?

this makes me disappointing. i thought that it would be up there at least for 10 years after completion. the space station is so advanced and so expensive it pains me to hear about it.

the space station is just the public white horse so to speak for something else that is facing this world as a whole , most likely implementing technology to destroy or deflect an asteroid

To me, that just means it will go out of orbit.

Which way will it go? I didn't read the article so ignore if it is going to drop from the heavens. Why not send it out instead of letting it fall.

The clemintine, supposedly useless, is comming back on a fly by.

Maybe they are building it to travel across space or visit our other planets for further research?

Basically they will not shoot it down, instead they will slowly make the station veer off course, into a collision course with Earth. Love to see our hard earned money go to waste.

Ion engines should be attached to send it to the edge of the universe.

is blow billions of dollars and then destroy what they spent

If you were under the impression that the ISS would be up there for a very long time then I think you were under the wrong impression to begin with. By 2016 it will of achieved its mission. Space Stations Decay, they get hit with micrometeorites, and they slowly get fatigued - it costs money to repair these things. Are we going to stick in LEO or move on?

Because we don't give a damn about democracy in other countries.

And Iraq and Afghanistan are what? They took out ruling dictator governments and installed democracy, and I cannot say they are succeeding, either. It is not our job to police the world. How can you be for spending trillions of dollars policing the world, against all military expenditures minus the ones directly in support the troops, and also against about 20 billion dollars NASA gets? That is a very dangerous viewpoint.

Nothing will ever be 100% in one country. The space programme is designed to discover and invent things, one of the goals is the commercialization of space, which is beginning to happen. Military expenditures (Minus the empires) are designed to be in the support of the troops?
