How were Social Security numbers given away?

news.yahoo.com

The nine digits that govern so much of Americans' identities are supposed to be ours for life — and only ours. But mine ended up linked to a Micronesian man who defaulted on a disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

I didn't find out until March, in a letter from a debt collector threatening to garnish my wages if I didn't pay $7,306 in two days. The same could happen to an unknown number of others, because of a processing glitch that the U.S. Social Security Administration didn't even know existed and the federal government hasn't fixed.

So the SSA knows about a glitch that gives out dual social security numbers and they are not fixing it. Why? Because they dont have the software!! I would hope they fix it and give the duplicate numbers totally new numbers. Our social security numbers our are key to getting shelter, a job and transportation her in the US, this needs to be fixed.

sad but true.

As far as I'm aware, kids were born, parents filed for an SSN with the closest SSA office and a card was issued with its "unique" (sic) number. Numbers were not generated dynamically but rather blocks of numbers were allocated to local SSA offices which then distributed the numbers they held as they were needed. As some sort of proof, my wife (who is 2 years my younger) has an SSN numerically higher than mine.

When the child was of appropriate age (either 18, when they started their first job or entered military service is legally allowed to), they were allowed / required to sign the card binding themselves forever to that number.

The problem of duplicate numbers extends beyond just the glitch though, through how to deal with solving the problem and also dealing with all the stolen numbers.

My wife has a home loan, car loan and more and those debts have tanked her credit rating... and oddly all those debts have occured within the last 10 years and her and I have been together nearly 15.

Sure would be nice to be able to live in that home and drive that car....

That is exactly how they are supposed to be assigned. If you know the system, you can tell what state a person was born by the first 3 digits of their SSN.

LINK: The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts:

The first set of three digits is called the Area Number
The second set of two digits is called the Group Number
The final set of four digits is the Serial Number

Good find

This is something that every American needs to be aware of. I know i would be blowing my stack if it ever happened to me.

It seems to me that the federal agencies that are collecting these ss #'s and reporting them should be the ones to rectify the matter, since they seem to be the ones causing the problems.

I know that's infuriating. But with something so large as a home loan & car loan isn't there a way to prove that they're not her debts and have her credit record cleared ?

This may be true now that social security numbers are given at birth. I was born in 1970 in Florida but didn't get my social security number / card until I was 15 & got my first job...in New York. My social security number's first 3 digits are those from NY.
