Dublin Diocese Commission Abuse Report

Jul 21st, 2009

The Dublin Diocese Commmission report is ready and when published it will cause an earthquake. It will expose the collusion, callousness, self-interest and downright sleaziness of the Catholic bishops in Ireland. It will expose their lack of moral authority and their unsuitability to hold any position of power, especially when that power concerns defenceless children. It will reveal their conscious protection of clerical rapists and their deliberate concealment of grave crimes in order to protect their own positions and the institution they serve.

They couldn’t believe it when Diarmuid Martin decided to cooperate with the investigation.

They were speechless.

Old whey-faced creeping-***** Desmond Connell was so appalled that he took Archbishop Martin to court in an attempt to prevent him from handing over confidential papers containing information about child abuse in the diocese.

Can you imagine his horror? Can you imagine his bafflement?

Can you imagine how he felt at the thought that lay people – the unanointed – would dare to question his princely, haughty, unfeeling, soulless, theoretical insipid, arrogant wisdom? This man, and all his bishop colleagues have been subject to a shared delusion, unchallenged for decades, that they have any authority whatever in this country. And successive governments have given them every reason to believe that they hold temporal sway over our fragile democracy.

After all, didn’t deValera give old John Charles McQuaid a veto over what went into the Constitution and what did not? And isn’t it ironic that McQuaid is one of the 19 bishops investigated in the report?

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was put in place to manage a disaster created by his predecessors. He’s a pragmatist, unlike his colleagues who are, by and large, a bunch of pompous fools. A bunch of pompous, self-interested, unprincipled fools who just happen to control a large part of our education and health services.

Parts of report on Church child abuse to be blacked out

Ahern seeks legal advice on what can be published

Thursday July 23 2009

PARTS of the report on child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese are likely to be blacked out when the document is published.

The censor strips, officially referred to as redactions, became more likely last night after the Cabinet decided to send the report to the Attorney General (AG) for his views. The AG could yet refer the report to the High Court to decide on how much can be published.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern briefed the Cabinet on the report yesterday, which names a number of persons currently before the courts in relation to alleged abuse by priests.

Mr Ahern told his colleagues that he was obliged by legislation to seek the AG's advice on elements within the report that might be prejudicial to criminal proceedings.

The report is the work of Circuit Court Judge Yvonne Murphy, who looked into 450 separate instances of alleged abuse by ordained priests of the Dublin Archdiocese.

A government spokesman said last night that the AG would consider the issues, and it could be up to the High Court to offer clarification.

He was unable to say whether there might be a special sitting before the courts resume in September.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet yesterday considered an implementation plan to respond to recommendations brought forward by the Ryan report.

The statements of financial affairs by 18 religious orders, which the Government demanded in the wake of the Ryan report, are being received.

The "vast majority" of submissions have come in, a government spokesman said, although "one or two are substantially delayed".

The Government wants to see a full picture before it settles on an amount that it will require the orders to pay.

Compensation

The Catholic Church paid only €128m under a 2002 indemnity deal that would otherwise result in 90pc of the compensation paid at the residential institutions' redress board -- estimated at €1.3bn -- being lumped onto the shoulders of the taxpayer.

The religious orders are due back to Government shortly, after which the Cabinet will appoint a three-person special audit commission to check that the accounts received accurately reflect the financial health of the Church bodies concerned.

Interesting debate in the Irish Senate as it highlights just how Opus Die and the Knights of Columbanus operate in the suppression of the truth about the horrific child abuse against Irish kids

Senator Joe O’Toole: I will tell the Minister how that applies to other countries. There has been much talk recently about Canada; I made reference to it myself this morning. Some years ago Canada set up an inquiry like the Ryan inquiry, and like the Ryan inquiry a senior judge from the superior courts was appointed to hear all the evidence. That judge was appointed but his appointment was objected to. He was removed from the commission of inquiry because he was a member of the Knights of St. Columbanus.

Can somebody tell me why we as politicians — the Minister, all our colleagues, the Cathaoirleach and myself — have to disclose all that we do in terms of our backgrounds etc.? We have to sign this form and that form. We have to declare an interest if we speak on something here. We have a Government of whatever colour which is committed to openness, transparency and all that goes with that but at the same time secret organisations such as the Knights of St. Columbanus and Opus Dei can do what they want.

I took the trouble to meet with Opus Dei years ago and it is written into their requirements that they should try to impose the beliefs of the organisation on their jobs. I raised the issue here years ago that people being appointed to jobs of sensitivity in areas like the Attorney General’s office and others should be asked the question about membership. I still believe that.

I do not believe we did this deal in 2002 without the involvement of the Knights of St. Columbanus. I heard the former Minister, Deputy Michael Woods, say during the week that he is not a member of the Knights of St. Columbanus or Opus Dei. I believe that anybody involved in that deal should be asked that question. Everybody appointed to a senior position in the State should be asked that question.

There is no place in an open, transparent democracy for people who have other agendas. The rest of us must stand up and declare an interest. I had to declare an interest earlier. This afternoon I declared an interest in terms of my INTO background and other matters. It is only right that we should do that to ensure that people know where we are coming from but that does not apply to these people.

I will give the House an example of the way that works. There is a priest in the west, Fr. Kevin Hegarty, who is a curate in a tiny parish as far west as one can go beyond Belmullet. He is a highly erudite, intelligent man with a huge amount to offer. He was editor of a church magazine, Intercom, in the 1990s. He wanted to develop a number of debates at that time, one of which was a debate too far. He wanted a debate on clerical child abuse. For his troubles, he was sacked by Bishop Brendan Comiskey, a man who was to hit the headlines very shortly after that. Bishop Brendan Comiskey was also selected by the Knights of St. Columbanus when they decided to show a more public face to the media. He was a media friendly bishop, and he was their chaplain or whatever.

He then went to Ferns where he dealt with child abuse cases. Before he went to Ferns, to divert slightly, he tried to instigate a boycott of the Irish Press newspapers on the grounds that they were committing blasphemy, a subject which is very topical at the moment. What was the blasphemy? Madonna the singer was expecting a child and a columnist made some comment about that and the Madonna and child icon precious to Christianity. It was a dumb, inappropriate comment but hardly one that should have led to that kind of action but that is what happened in that case.

The same man went to Wexford where he was in charge of all the problems in Monageer. When the Wexford People and the Wicklow People newspapers honestly and openly reported the conviction of a priest there for paedophile activity, he and the Knights of St. Columbanus attempted to boycott the People newspapers. That is on the record. There was also the horrible incident when there was a complaint and an investigation regarding a priest in Monageer having sexually assaulted a child. The priest insisted on doing the First Communion or Confirmation — I cannot remember which — two weeks later. The people appealed to Bishop Cumiskey to stop the priest doing so, but he insisted. This man was up on the altar for the event. It is similar to what Mr. Michael O’Brien described on television during “Questions and Answers”. Mr. O’Brien spoke about being assaulted and raped on one night and being offered the sacred host the following morning by the same person. The same issue was involved for the child in Monageer.

That incident was investigated by the local Garda sergeant, who did a very good job. His chief superintendent insisted on getting the files and nothing else happened. Too much time had passed by the time people figured out why the Director of Public Prosecutions had done nothing about it. As a result, the then Garda Commissioner appointed an outside chief superintendent to investigate the matter. He came to the conclusion that the local investigation had been well done but the matter had not been properly brought to a conclusion. The files were lost. The files were in the gift of the chief superintendent who was a senior Knight of St. Columbanus in the area. He retired, received his Benemerenti medal from the Pope and took his secrets to the grave. The priest was never prosecuted and the matter was never brought to a conclusion.

Recently, the Comptroller and Auditor General issued a report about the payments by the Residential Institutions Redress Board to victims of clerical abuse. The latest figure is 1.2 billion euros. Let me repeat that. One thousand two hundred million euros.

Now, what do you think this money is for? Is it because the government think these people deserve a holiday and could do with a few bob to help them go to Malaga? No. Is it because the people who claimed are so damn nice you couldn’t refuse them? No, it isn’t. Well, maybe it’s because the Catholic Church has decided to share some of its vast wealth with poor people, in line with the teaching of Jesus? Ah come on now! You have to be joking surely? The Catholic Church follow Jesus’s teaching? Gimme a break!

No. It’s none of the above. The people have been awarded the money to partially make up for the fact that they were physically, sexually and psychologically abused by priests, nuns and monks. Read that again carefully. Abused by priests by priests, nuns and monks. Not, you will notice, by postmen, police, nurses, dog wardens or any other employee of the State. Children were raped, beaten and psychologically abused by nuns, priests and monks.

You’d imagine therefore that they would be compensated by the organisation their abusers belonged to, wouldn’t you? Of course you would. So how much did the Catholic church pay towards the one thousand two hundred million euros so far paid out to victims?

Most of it, I hear you saying.

No!

Half of it, you suggest.

No!!

A quarter, you shout, in despair.

I stand up and wave my arms at you in dismissal. No, no and no again.

The Catholic church paid a tenth of the cost. The Catholic church paid 127 million euros and no matter how high the awards go, that is all the Catholic church will ever pay.

What??

You heard me right. Even though the children were raped, beaten and psychologically abused by nuns, priests and monks, the Catholic church will never pay more than 127 million euros.

So what uncritical benefactor has ridden to the assistance of the Catholic church? What kind and decent person has decided to rescue the church from the penury it brought upon itself by its abuse of children? Who could possibly be so generous? Well, look no further. Look in the mirror, for this wonderful benefactor is you. Your taxes are paying one thousand two hundred million euros to make up the shortfall, and this is the result of an agreement signed by a government minister.

Michael Woods, PhD, agreed this deal with the Catholic church, including Sister Helena O’Donoghue of the Sisters of Mercy, of whom more anon. Dr Woods, you might remember, was once Minister for Health, and did nothing at the time to dispel the belief that he was a medical practitioner when in fact he had a doctorate arising out of some research on tomatoes. Dr Woods is also a well-known member of Opus Dei. Dr Michael Woods concluded a deal whereby your money and mine was used to underwrite the Catholic church without limit. Can you imagine that? These guys paid in 127 million and that was an end of their obligations, even though they were the ones who had committed the abuse. Even though the claims are currently at one thousand two hundred million and rising, the church will never have to pay an extra penny. Our money will be used to pay the rest, no matter how much the bill comes to.

Now, who is Sr Helena O’Donoghue? Sr O’Donoghue is a member of the community that controls the Mater Hospital in Dublin. The Mater Hospital has recently been designated the location for the National Children’s Hospital, even though it is completely inaccessible for children coming from outside Dublin, and for their parents. The location was chosen even though a suitable site was offered at no cost to the government on the periphery of Dublin. (A site which was easily accessible from the N7).

The Mater is also the hospital whose ethics committee attempted to prevent cancer patients from using contraception. A truly Christian institution.

The Kincora Boys' Home was a home for working boys in Belfast that was the scene of a notorious child sex abuse scandal.

The scandal first came to public attention in January 1980 after a news report in the Irish Independent. On 3 April 1980 three members of staff at the home, William McGrath, Raymond Semple and Joseph Mains, were charged with a number of offences relating to the systematic abuse of children in their care over a number of years. All three were later convicted and jailed. Mains the former warden received a term of six years, Semple a former assistant warden, five years and McGrath four years.

Allegations later emerged that the Royal Ulster Constabulary had been informed of the abuse at the home for years previously, but had not moved to prevent it because the manager of the home, William McGrath, was also the leader of an obscure loyalist paramilitary group, called Tara, and was being blackmailed by MI5 into providing intelligence on other loyalist groups. The tabloid press then linked the home with a whole series of establishment figures without any evidence being provided.

Dr Ian Paisley, leader of the DUP and moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church, was accused of failing to report the fact of McGrath's homosexuality to the relevant authorities although he denied ever being advised by his informant, a church member, Miss Valerie Shaw, that McGrath worked in a boys home. McGrath was himself married with children.

In response to growing coverage in the media, the Eastern Health and Social Services Board decided to institute a policy of not employing "homosexuals" in any caring roles[citation needed]. Some perfectly innocent individuals in other homes were discovered and dismissed. Although the policy was finally overturned by the Northern Ireland Department of Health and Social Services, the damage was done and an inevitable chill factor set in. [1]

A "private inquiry" was set up in 1982 by James Prior, the Northern Ireland Secretary of State under the Commissioner of Complaints, Stephen McGonagle, to deal with these allegations, but it collapsed after three of its members resigned. Debates on Kincora in the Northern Ireland Assembly were held on 22 March and 9 November 1983. Another inquiry, under Judge William Hughes, was then announced in January 1984.

In December 1985, Judge Hughes reported after his lengthy public inquiry. The view that there was a more extensive 'ring' operating at the home was not accepted.[2] This inquiry reported many years before abuse on an extensive scale was uncovered in care homes in the Irish Republic and Britain.

"MI5 ran a brothel in Church Street in Kensington throughout much of the 1950's and early 1960's for the use of visiting dignitaries, diplomats and intelligence officers.

"While for those too important to visit such an establishment certain discreet gentlemen were called upon to provide young female or male company directly to the VIP hotel bedroom." (66.102.9.104...:hr0jRE7eyewJ:www.spyschool.com/spybios/profumoj.htm+mi5+stephen-ward&hl=en)

The British security services have been determined to keep Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom and reportedly have been prepared to use dirty tricks to control the political leaders.

Reportedly the security services were prepared to allow child abuse to take place at the Kincora boys' home in Northern Ireland.

Kincora was a boys' home in East Belfast, run by Joseph Mains, Raymond Semple and William McGrath, who were reportedly fond of young boys. (Kincora Boys' Home - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

McGrath was also the leader of an extremist Protestant paramilitary organization.

Allegedly, "Kincora was run as a virtual gay brothel by loyalist leaders and MI5 . Its clientele who preyed for years on vulnerable young boys... included loyalist paramilitary leaders , unionist politicians , judges and public figures . MI5... used it as a blackmailers lever." (Michael stone, MI5 and Kincora - Irish Nationalism)

Allegedly, "Loyalists have long had links with Zionist gangsters and have received Israeli weapons. In at least one incident weapons were exchanged for intelligence material on British missile systems, and loyalists rely on Israeli-'Russian' mafiosi for supplies of ecstasy pills. Loyalists have also engaged in the smuggling of non-Whites into Eire in alliance with the 'Russian' mafia.

"Sexual perversion is also a disturbing undercurrent in Northern Ireland’s paramilitary netherworld... William McGrath, a leading loyalist, was imprisoned after sexually molesting children for years with the knowledge of British intelligence – to whom he was giving information – in the Kincora Boy’s Home. John McKeague, founder of the Red Hand Commando, was also a feared pederast". (Michael stone, MI5 and Kincora - Irish Nationalism)

Reportedly, in the 1970s, several newspapers claimed that the former UK Prime Minister Ted Heath, who was reported to be gay, was a regular visitor to Kincora Boys Home. However, references to this have been disappearing from the internet. (cached text )

In the book Who Framed Colin Wallace? (Who Framed Colin Wallace) by Paul Foot (Macmillan, London 1989), we learn about the Kincora boys' home scandal.

Allegedly:

1. Colin Wallace served in a special Ministry of Defence press unit in Northern Ireland which dealt in "psychological operations."

2. Wallace tried to alert the authorities about what was going on at Kincora.

3. McGrath was working for MI5; the Security Service ignored the plight of the boys at Kincora.

4. In 1973 MI5 set up a propaganda campaign named Clockwork Orange. The purpose of Clockwork Orange was to blackmail and control top political figures in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, including Harold Wilson and Edward Heath.

5. In October 1974, Wallace refused to take any further part in the Clockwork Orange operation. He was sacked and he moved to England.

The husband of a friend and colleague was found dead.

Wallace was accused of murder and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment.

On 30 January 1990, UK Armed Forces Minister, Archie Hamilton admitted that several key allegations made by Colin Wallace were true.

It was alledged in the book 'War of the Windsors', and the Sunday People newspaper pg17, that Lord Mountbatten was rumoured to have been linked to the Kincora boy's abuse network. Lord Mountbatten the last viceroy in India, was reknowned to be wildly promiscuous, bisexual and to enjoy a bit of 'rough' or the plesures of young working class boys or indeed peasant indian boys. In other words Lord Mountbatten enjoyed rogering the children of lower classes and peasants globally.
This is revealed in the book 'War of the Windsors', and may account for the non prosecution of Kincora clients and the relunctance of the authorities to act against those running the Kincora care home untill 1981, despite the vice ring being in operation since 1977, and the repeated allegations made against those pillars of society, upright citizens in charge of Kincora. The very Reverend William McGrath and co. Those operating the Kincora child vice ring were eventually prosecuted in 1981, but no charges were ever brought against the elite VIP clientelle of the Kincora child abuse vice ring, which included, prominent buisnessmen, hanging judges and government officials who were never prosecuted for their exploitation and sexual abuse of young working class boys. In court it was found that the so called pillars of society running the home, were guilty of the RITUAL sexual abuse of defenceless young boys in their care, whom they exploited and sold to their VIP clientelle. The authorities relunctance to act against the Kincora paedophiles also may have been because of the proven MI5/special branch interest in the VIP clientelle of the Kincora child vice network. These powerful authortarian figures would prove useful and supportive of any RUC actions in the future, given the MI5 files complied on the Kincora clientelle. Many of the VIP clientelle who sexually abused and degraded young working class boys are still prominent members of Ulster society, still highly respected pillars of society, some still High court judges, magistrates etc, some even have roles which give them direct access to children, some are now governors of schools, some are doctors etc. Their sordid grubby elite existence unaffected and unsoiled by their perverted behaviour and abuse of young working class children. These scumbags got off scot free from the Kincora child abuse scandal with their reputations and social status intact and unaffected, because the authorities chose not to prosecute them, afterall it was only young working class children they abused, and the working class are always expendable to the rich. In the world and exclusive social circles of these scumbags it is ok for rich perverts to sexuallly and physically abuse the children of the poor. The moral code of the filthy rich and powerful says this is clearly acceptable behaviour. Now we know why they're called the filthy rich.

The Kincora scandal shocked Northern Ireland when it first received media coverage in 1980. Since then, there have been six enquiries of various kinds into the systematic sexual abuse of boys in public care in Kincora and other institutions, but none of them has silenced public concern. At the heart of the Kincora affair is the intrigue that surrounds one of the convicted sex abusers, William McGrath. A prominent Orangeman on an evangelical mission, McGrath, though never elected to public office, nevertheless exerted a powerful influence on the development of Unionism in the 1970s and 1980s, as the IRA campaign of violence escalated. Using hitherto unpublished sources, this book reveals that as an agent of the British intelligence service, MI5, McGrath unwittingly played a key role in the deliberate de-stabilization of the Northern Ireland state, a policy that had the long-term aim of facilitating British withdrawal - the so-called "doomsday" scenario. It also details, because of this, McGrath's activities as a sex offender were covered up and two police investigations were obtructed by the British establishment.

What has this to do with my thread about the alleged abuse of 133 000 children by Catholic Orders and the Alleged coverup by Members of the Knights of Colambanus and Opus Dei?

Its good to see in your thread their were convictions i wonder if any the Priests or nuns will be convicted as per my thread or will this goverment they have in their back pocket sweep it under the carpet afterall they are the ones paying the abused with TAXPAYERS money.

I think your thread is a bit weak compared to mines we are talking GLOBAL when it comes to the RC Church and their abuse.

Can you not start your own thread? How childish trying to invade my thread and take the bad look of the biggest child abusers in HISTORY fact!

Irish State 'colluded with religious authorities to hide child abuse', report says

The full horror of children’s lives destroyed by sexual, physical and emotional abuse meted out by Roman Catholic religious orders over decades in Ireland was revealed yesterday in an official five-volume report.

A nine-year investigation by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse concluded that the Irish Government colluded in a conspiracy of silence as no action was taken to prevent the sexual abuse of thousands of children who passed through Catholic-run institutions, even though the abuse was known to be endemic.

The report makes relentlessly grim reading, chronicling the shocking conditions under which about 35,000 children were held, many from infancy until adulthood.

“I am profoundly sorry and deeply ashamed that children suffered in such awful ways in these institutions,” said Cardinal Sean Brady, Ireland’s most senior cleric, last night. The report’s publication was delayed by several years after a lengthy legal battle waged by the Christian Brothers to withhold the names of all its members, dead or alive. An agreement was eventually struck in 2004, allowing the Christian Brothers’ institutions to be identified.

More than a thousand witnesses testified to abuse in 216 schools and residential settings across Ireland over a period from 1914 to 2000. More than 800 individuals were identified as physical or sexual abusers — an extraordinary number compared with the handful of prosecutions and convictions. Ninety per cent of witnesses reported physical abuse while half reported sexual abuse.

“Acute and chronic contact and non-contact sexual abuse was reported, including vaginal and anal rape, molestation and voyeurism in both isolated cases and on a regular basis over long periods of time,” the document states. “Female witnesses in particular described, at times, being told they were responsible for the sexual abuse they experienced, by both their abuser and those to whom they disclosed abuse,” the report said.

The 2,500-page document, which cost €70 million (£60 million) to compile, caused anger even before it was formally released when some victims who turned up to the Dublin launch were refused entry. The commission, chaired by Justice Sean Ryan, called police and threatened to make arrests. “This is a farce, it’s an absolute sham,” shouted John Kelly, a victim. “Why are we being excluded? We were marginalised as children and you are doing the same to us again now!”

The commission found that the worst offender was the Christian Brothers order, which ran most of the institutions for older boys, while the Sisters of Mercy, which was supposed to care for girls, also came in for heavy criticism. The report said that cases were managed “with a view to minimising the risk of public disclosure and consequent damage to the institution and the Congregation”.

“A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from,” it said. On the rare occasions that the Department of Education, which had legal responsibility for the children, received complaints of sexual abuse, it “dealt inadequately” with them.

Hundreds of pages detail the horrors of life at specific institutions. “It was a secret enclosed world, run on fear,” one Brother told the commission about St Joseph’s Industrial School in Tralee, Co Kerry. Glin Industrial School, Co Limerick, was where “Brothers with a known propensity for sexual abuse were transferred, indicating a serious indifference to the safety of children”.

A whole chapter is devoted to a Christian Brother given the pseudonym of John Brander — real name Donal Dunne, who was convicted in 1999 of his crimes and given a two-year prison sentence — which describes his progress through six different schools where he physically terrorised and sexually abused children in his classroom.

The report says that his career, while shocking in itself, illustrated the ease with which sexual predators could operate within the educational system of the State without fear of disclosure or sanction.

Elsewhere it describes the practice of floggings at Daingean Reformatory School, Co Offaly, as ritualised beatings that should not have been tolerated. At two residential schools for deaf girls, run by the Dominican Order of Nuns and the Daughters of the Cross of Liège, the report says that some girls “did experience sexual abuse at the hands of ‘godfathers’ which they were unable to report or were disbelieved when they did”.

The new leader of Catholics in England and Wales said that the Irish clergy who admitted child abuse were courageous for facing up to their past. “That takes courage, and also we shouldn’t forget that this account today will also overshadow all of the good that they also did,” the Most Rev Vincent Nichols told ITV News.

Sex abuse 'endemic' in Catholic institutions
More than 800 priests, nuns, monks and teachers created an "endemic" culture of child sex abuse in Catholic schools and residential homes over almost 80 years, an inquiry has found.
www.telegraph.co.uk...
By Auslan Cramb Last Updated: 1:04PM BST 21 May 2009

The state-funded institutions in Ireland were a "secret and closed world run on fear", the decade-long report concluded. However, no new prosecutions are expected.

The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse found that nuns and priests terrorised children and covered up years of brutality, rape and molestation in workhouse-style schools. Ritual beatings were encouraged and paedophiles were shielded.

The investigation found that in most cases the religious orders hid the crimes and protected the abusers, sometimes moving them to different schools where they carried on attacking children. One serial sex abuser who began his career as a Christian brother was excused his vows after three cases of sex abuse, but was able to teach for 40 years.

He terrorised and sexually abused children in six different schools before he was convicted of sex abuse in the 1980s. In another case, a monk who abused children in England was brought back to Ireland and assigned a teaching post at Lota School in Co Cork, which was run by the Brothers of Charity. He later admitted multiple sexual assaults on boys.

Many of the worst outrages involved schools run by the Christian Brothers, who were the largest providers of residential care for boys. At Letterfrack School in Galway, founded on a remote hillside in 1885, levels of sexual abuse were chronic and physical punishment was "severe, excessive and pervasive". Two sex abusers were present at the school for 14 years each.

Schools run by the Sisters of Mercy were also part of the culture of abuse. They operated 26 "industrial" schools for girls, including Goldenbridge in Dublin where the regime was "cruel, unrelenting and severe".

There was a high level of physical abuse by religious and lay staff and children lived in constant fear of beatings. The school ran a rosary bead industry and imposed "impossible standards" on the girls, who suffered emotional abuse and were regularly "humiliated and belittled".

The report calls for a permanent public memorial to the victims. The Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the report was an appalling reminder of a "bygone day" and its recommendations would be taken on board. The Irish state is accused of abdicating responsibility for around 35,000 children who were placed in the network of reformatories, industrial schools and orphanages up to the 1990s, including disadvantaged, neglected and abandoned boys and girls as well as unmarried mothers.

The commission's five-volume, 2,500-page report describes a Victorian model of childcare that survived from 1914 through most of the 20th century and will further erode the moral authority of the Catholic Church in Ireland. It says a climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and "all those run for boys", adding: "Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from."

Sex abuse was endemic in boys' homes and common in girls' schools - with predatory abuse from male employees and even visitors - but the Department of Education did little to stop it and was "completely deferential" to the religious orders. The commission took evidence in detail from 1,100 people who complained of abuse by 800 members of staff and lay workers in 216 residential homes and schools.

Nearly all the victims complained of physical abuse, and half said they had been sexually abused Many of those who carried out the abuse are now dead, and a government compensation scheme has already paid out almost one billion euros in compensation to 12,500 people.

There will be no new prosecutions as a result of the inquiry and alleged abusers have not been "named and shamed".

Victims of the regime, who were barred from the report's launch yesterday, complained yesterday that the commission's report did not go far enough and failed to hold those responsible to account.

The Christian Brothers successfully sued the commission in 2004 to keep the identities of all of its members, dead or alive, unnamed in the report. John Walsh, of campaign group Irish Survivors of Child Abuse, himself a victim who gave evidence, said: "I'm very angry, very bitter, and feel cheated and deceived.

"I would have never opened my wounds if I'd known this was going to be the end result. It has devastated me and will devastate most victims because there is no criminal proceedings and no accountability whatsoever."

The Most Rev Vincent Nichols, the new leader of Catholics in England and Wales, said: "Those in religious orders and some of the clergy in Dublin... have to face these facts from their past which instinctively and quite naturally they'd rather not look at.

"Those that abused the trust that was placed in them should be brought to public account."

They even abused children with disabilities my God what kind of people where they???

Staff preyed on children with disabilities

Thursday May 21 2009

SUFFER the little children, particularly it seems the most vulnerable.

The Ryan report found children with bad hearing, eyesight or learning difficulties were particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse.

The confidential committee heard 59 reports of abuse from 58 witnesses, 39 male and 19 female, relating to 14 special needs schools and residential services managed by religious congregations.

They frequently had to travel far from home and live in residential care to get the treatment they needed.

Witnesses reported that while attending special needs services they were physically abused and assaulted using leather straps, canes, spade and broom handles, kitchen implements and rulers.

Gagged

People in three different facilities reported being taken from their beds at night by male religious staff and sexually abused by a staff member.

In some cases, physical violence accompanied sexual abuse and victims recalled having their heads held under water, being bound and gagged and otherwise restrained.

Two were assaulted by "gangs" of fellow residents.

One was brought to a pub instead of an expected trip to the cinema by a Brother, who would go on to abuse him over three to four years. Another abuser was a man who had access to the grounds of an intellectual disability service.

The victims recalled an absence of recreational facilities and said that no effort was made to occupy or provide age appropriate activities to children who were bed-bound.

"The most consistently reported form of emotional abuse by the witnesses with special needs was of being denigrated, humiliated and disparaged about their appearance, mannerisms and intelligence," the report stated.

Many deaf witnesses described how distressing it was to be denied the use of sign language, which was their only means of communication.

Those forced to communicate verbally reported being socially isolated.

Children who were blind or deaf described the terror of being locked in a room as punishment.

I am sure the usual suspects will accuse me of "anti-Catholic bigotry" for discussing these crimes against humanity.

These horrific crimes prove the depravity and the satanic nature of the Roman Catholic Church and I say that not as a condemnation of the laity (who are blind and lost) of said Church but as a condemnation against the evil Priesthood, Holy Orders (so-called), and the hierarchy of the Roman Church.

Already we have a said apoligist on trying to hijack my thread rather than condemn these wicked acts committed by the Unchristian Brothers the Sisters of No Mercy and the Unholy See

They would do better to comment on these barbaric acts against humanity!

Sorry for the big thread mate but that shows the enormity of the situation.

I'll take a wee break from posting and people can get to grips with what is happening if i could condense the thread i would. Some of the stories are really shocking but what would you expect from this abomination.
