Chinese researchers have managed to create powerful stem cells from mouse skin and used these to generate fertile live mouse pups.

They used induced pluripotent skin cells, or iPS cells -- cells that have been reprogrammed to look and act like embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells, taken from days-old embryos, have the power to morph into any cell type and, in mice, can be implanted into a mother's womb to create living mouse pups.

Although this has been highly praised as a step forward in stem/skin cell research they have been quick to distance themselves from the controversy of human cloning even though theoretically it could be achieved using skin from a human subject.

We are confident that tremendous good can come from demonstrating the versatility of reprogrammed cells in mice, and this research will be used to ... understand the root causes of disease and lead to viable treatments and cures of human afflictions,"

It basically states that it wouldnt be ethical to conduct experiments on human fertility etc.

to be honest wouldnt surprise me if this has already been tried or about to be

That is amazing, can only be the start of many new things!

it is certainly a great step towards alot of good research and possible cures, lets hope its not used for the bad

Good news in stem cell field. This is exactly the cloning tech shown in sci-fi. No longer a fiction.

It will have huge implications, you can now grow organs out of your own cells and go on replacing the aged ones, as you grow old. Single people can have children and .... Limitless lifespans !

I'm happy that its happening in China. It's impossible to stop them from doing the same with human cells. That should be the goal.
