A trusted source has send me a picture today of one of those mysterious black helicopters..

Normally they are noticed in rural areas - this event is abnormal because it occured over the city center of a national capital at 18h00!

Today, July 10, 2009 a black helicopter was spotted doing three orbits over Ottawa, Canada - orbitting landmarks such as the Canadian National Defense Headquarters, Parliament Hill, and "The Market" - a major tourist attraction.

Someone managed to grab a pic:

It looks similar to these FBI helicopters, but this cannot be confirmed.

FBI chopper:

the helicopter in question was orbitting at approx. 2000 ft and the only markings observed were on the underbelly and in the "subdued" style that is common amongst traffic cops...Someone here has seen these cruisers before (example of decal):

The helicopter had an instrument bubble mounted below the nose.

The Canadian forces do not use these helicopters! The eyewitness reports that they were initially expecting an approach to the US embassy located in central Otawa - then doing three orbits around the National Defense HeadQuarters - and Parliament Hill - implying tacit approval to use Canadian airspace...Normally the only helicopter traffic in the area is limited to CF/civ/ORNG traffic - any other helicopter traffic is abnormal and also there has been a recent increase in general helicopter acitivty - especially towards a N/NE trajectory..

EDIT-- spelling

Well with as poor a photo as the one you linked, as far as we can tell is that it could very well be the FBI heli in the second pic.

Or it could be a Blue Heli , because all we see it the silhouette anyhow.

Need better photos to analyze.

I am aware of "black helicopters" with no markings and such, but I am not ready to agree that this is one of them. Evidence is king around here after all.

Any theories on what they're up to then?

It could be anything really, from some military chopper to a charter carrying tourists taking photos of the landmarks.

It is not.
That is restricted airspace.

Here is a crop of the cell phone pic with some filters for sharpness/contrast:

It's of importance to note that the RCMP generally does NOT employ helicopter presence in the area (the Obama visit was an exception)

Also, no local or provincial police force in this jurisdiction even OWNS a helicopter. They use small planes..

For reference, I'll add some of the common helicopters you'd expect to see around this area.
