NEWS: 630 Dead, 600 Wounded In Nigerian Religious War This Week

A religious war in Nigeria that has been ongoing since 2001 has dramatically increased in the last 3 months. This week, Christian militiamen sealed off the town of Yelwa with felled trees and began systematically burning buildings, and killing Fulani Muslims with machine guns and machetes. Muslim leaders said that 630 people had been buried in the town,and an equal number were seriously wounded after the killings this week alone. The death toll could climb to over 1,000 as some are still missing.

YELWA, Nigeria (Reuters) - A Muslim community leader in the Nigerian town of Yelwa said 630 bodies had been buried in the town after an attack by Christian militia on Sunday.
Survivors said the final death toll could reach 1,000 as many people were still missing, and another 600 were seriously wounded.
"We buried a total of 630 people yesterday, 1,500 people were injured and 600 were taken for emergency treatment," community leader Abdullahi D. Abdullahi told Reuters.


This most recent attack is in retaliation to almost 100 Christians that were killed in February when Muslims attacked a church, killing 48 inside, and others in the area. The strife is centered on competing claims for fertile farmland in the Plateau state, which only enflames the already present tension between the Christian Tarok and the Muslim Fulani. The recent rash of killings have pushed this last months death toll higher than the number of war fatalities in Iraq for the same period.

with death tolls like that, I would say there is a "real" jihad there, not the so called type of jihad that the American administration claims we have to worry about with this war on terrorism.

The media really doesn't cover stories like this. It's just about the opposite of what's going on in Sudan right now. There, the Muslims are killing the Christians. Many have fled to Chad for safety. When you stand back and take it all in, it's got to make some wonder if we are nearing what many call the end times. Things are just too weird.

Colonolism in Africa has caused every civil war in the great Continent of Africa.

The white man has done nothing but divide and conqueor Africa ever since the dawn of civilization.

It's not in the media because they know the white man is the cause of the problems in Africa.

if these terrorist groups that we are against had their way they would do exactly what is going on in that "real" jihad as you say.

How do you know it was Muslims who first initiated the war and not the Christians?

hello its not black and white, both groups are black fighting eachother, noone told them to start a civil war, christianity and islam were in parts of africa long before the colonial time period.

also, hate, religious intolerance, strife, food, etc are the root of most wars there, not just from what white colonialists did.

my observation of you is that youre racist and are caught up in your hate so much that you cant see everything isnt white man's fault, these wars are these peoples own making, stop blaming others for another countries actions.

First of all, what Colonialism did was place rival tribes and sects basically down the street from eachother when that was not the case before the white man arrived.

It's not a black and white issue, it never was a black and white issue in the great Continent of Africa until the white man came to suck Africa from all of her resources, her people, her knowledge, and her gold.

Everything today in Africa is a result of what the white European man did.

no, war, tribal difference, etc are inherant(sp?) in every culture on earth, it was there before white men even touched africa.
