That kid needs a desperate reality check. Games are fun and all, but how skewed does your perspective have to be to kill somebody over a video game?
Take a break every once in a while. Sheesh.
On the evening of October 26, 1984, nineteen year old John McCollum shot and killed himself while listening to the recorded music of rocker Ozzy Osbourne. That night, John listened repeatedly to several of Osbourne’s albums, including Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, and Speak of the Devil. With his headphones on and the music playing, John placed a .22-caliber handgun to his head and took his life.
The Issue: Audience Reaction to Art: Who is Responsible? Art is intended to be evocative. But if a work of art evokes a violent or otherwise illegal response, should the artist be held responsible for the actions of his or her audience? Is this what Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr. had in mind when he stated, "[t]he most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic"?
At the trial, Mark Petric testified that his son came into the room and asked his parents: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."
The father testified that he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from a gunshot.
His wife, Susan, 43, died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The prosecution said Daniel Petric then tried to make the shootings look like a murder and attempted suicide. He shoved the gun into his father's hand and said, "Hey Dad, here's your gun. Take it," Mark Petric testified.
He confessed: "A fan threw it on stage and I thought it was a toy. It must have been stunned by the lights because it looked dead when I picked it up. I put it in my mouth as a joke. Its wings started flapping and I ripped it out of my mouth but its head came off!"
This song isn't about suicide, but the dangers of alcohol, like the song "Alcohol Demon." Also, THERE ARE NO SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES. As for the teenagers that killed themselves, Ozzy was accused because the teenagers were listening to "Suicide Solution" when they were found dead. Like what Ozzy said: "I swear on mu kid's life I never said get the #ing gun." A great song though.
This sounds like the old argument that somehow, nebulous pieces of media can drive the youth to murder. If it's not a comic books such as "Blade" or the devil's music like "The Beatles" telling our youth to kill or "Ozzy biting the head off live bats", etc. are driving the kids to violence then certainly it must be video games. It couldn't simply be because of other phycological imbalances that science backs up as fact... Hmm Just a thought.
