U.S. judge: Guantanamo evidence must be made public

www.reuters.com

A federal judge rejected on Monday a U.S. government request to keep secret the unclassified evidence that it says justifies the continued imprisonment of more than 100 Guantanamo Bay prisoners.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan ruled the government cannot keep the documents known as factual returns from public disclosure and must seek court approval to keep specific information secret.

A victory for detainees and reporters who argued the news media and public have a right of access to them.

With Obama calling for "de-classification," more"openness," and "transparency," it would seem obvious that records supporting the continued detention of people without charges filed should be disclosed.

With rising concern about martial law, and its attendant suspension of Habeas Corpus (the most powerful Constitutional guarantee of freedom), why shouldn't the Government disclose at least the FACTS it contends that it has justifying warrantless arrest, detention without grand jury or other 'presentment, and denial of judicial review?

ATS members should find out who in their states and districts represent their interests in Congress and immediately e-mail, call or fax them their support of this disclosure.

Perhaps a positive response in Congress will open their minds to the REAL "disclosure" many have been awaiting.

Anyone here know how to do 'blast fax'?

I understand that staffers on The Hill more readily respond to pieces of paper than to messages and e-mail.

Someone here should set up a fax thread/page for members to join and hit their reps with a few keystrokes.
