What caused the American Civil War

Our first civil war started because Lincoln was elected.

In the presidential election of 1860, the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against the expansion of slavery beyond the states in which it already existed. The Republican victory in that election resulted in seven Southern states declaring their secession from the Union even before Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861. Both the outgoing and incoming U.S. administrations rejected secession, regarding it as rebellion.

Lincoln wins the election and states started leaving the union immediately, so one man winning a election started the Civil War.

Fast forward to today, today is tax day and tea parties are happening all across the nation this conservative movement is protesting taxes, but thats not the only thing going on in America today. At least 20 states are moving forward with sovereignty bills, gun and ammo sales are through the roof. Popular radio and tv networks are in almost open revolt against the federal government. Our economy is in shambles, unemployment and homelessness are sky rocketing. And do stay turned for even more taxes and more draconian type laws. Oh yeah we need another 86 billion dollars for Iraq and Afghanistan. Corruption both politically and in the business world seems to be running rampant. We have rumors of hidden underground bunkers for the elite and FEMA camps for the rest of us.

So

What will be the cause of the second American Civil War?

My only problem to this is that everyone is reacting after the fact. I'm all for states declaring sovereignty and independence and all that jazz, but it's a day late and a dollar short. Where we they when bush was passing his Patriot Act with stalled on the congress floor prior to 9/11 and was passed immediately after it happened. The feds been stompin on state rights, why do something now, its like puttin a band-aid on a broken leg in my eyes.

When Bush was prez he, his cabinet, cohorts and and all around cronies were and still are robbing this country blind, no one organized for anything. He still gave Haliburton multibillion dollar contracts in Iraq (money which "vanished") and hundred million dollar no bid contracts to rebuild New Orleans (how much of that money has been spent compared to whats been done?) His policies not to mention an ignorant congress stood by and drove this car into the red and keep the gas floored. Red lights flashin on the dashboard and everything.

I feel strongly that now that obama is in the driver seat everyone that remained ignorant (not us on the ATS, we've been on top of that and hats off to everyone that visits) decided to look at what all those flashing red were and now they know, everyone jumped out the whip and are now saying "We had nothing to do with it! We're just around for the ride"

Now it's time for this whip to get fixed and no one wants to get stuck paying the bill. Well in order for this car to get back on the road we HAVE to make the hard decisions..taxes WILL increase they have to, its the only way our pea brained congress can get the books to weight out evenly.

They made out quite well at Waterloo and who knows how many other wars. It would be good to nail down the facts and who ultimately profits from violent confrontations. Would be a good thread on its own.

Our first Civil War started because the southern states became alarmed at the perceived radicalization of the Union under policies and political leadership that encouraged northern commerce, while systematically disenfranchising the southern landed-gentry of the time.

The North benefited from all the infrastructure development and the virtual monopoly of market power. The south was 'locked in time' relying on slave labor to produce for the land holders.

Once the south became economically prosperous, due to the invention of the gin, there revitalized political power (money) threatened northern entrenched interests; and the northern businessmen politicians fought back by political maneuver. They capitalized on the growing acceptance that the premise of slavery was anti-constitutional. The fight got ugly. 'We the people' paid for it.

Slavery was a counter-productive practice in the final analysis, but none rose to offer a suitable alternative that would protect the rich of the south, so it's abolition was a direct threat against the holders of power in the south. Of course they fought back.

The media of the time, and the politicians as well, made great efforts to define this as a moral war, but that is not how it started.

Once Lincoln won the Presidency, based on the position that no state had the right to secede from the Union, it took away the South's last trump card. They had been courting European friendships in a hope to establish a realistic 'fall back' position based on southern sovereignty, given European support. It failed. The south tried to exploit their virtual monopoly of cotton, that failed too.

As usual, the war profiteers and banksters benefited handsomely from both sides (remember when borrowing for war, each side has to promise to pay back the losing sides debt).

There will be no 2nd Civil War. If anything, it will simply be a revolution, those without a voice, against those with.

A civil war is an impossibility in this day and age. Any uprising would be stamped out by the superior firepower of the federal government. The US governement is just too big and powerful for anything like a revolution or civil war to happen.

Eight years with George Dubya Bush as president should be quite enough.

Wasn't the cause of the civil war the result of Power. Who was more powerful the States or the Federal Gov't?
Slavery was an issue that helped to escalate the issue but it wasn't the cause. Nor was Lincoln getting elected.
When the Federal gov't gave the power to the Supream court to determine how the constitution was to be interpreted neither the States or the Federal Gov't became the most powerful.
We always think it was slavery that caused the war and it wasn't. Had the south won the war we would have found out that the States were more powerful than the Federal Govn't but since they didn't win the Federal Gov't is stronger than the States.
Lincoln never had a problem with the South owning slaves but Lincoln being elected was President it was another loss that the South could not endure so war was the final option.
Now bring this to the fore front of today. Are we that bad off? We have 300,000,000 people who live here and yes we have our differences but we can still hear the middle of the pack people discuss how we should handle the situation and we are still willing to discuss how we should move forward. Only when we and only hear the far right and the far left shouting who is right or wrong will we be at the brink of Civil War.

What caused the War of Northern Aggression, was pretty much what we're starting to fight right now.

An overbearing Federal Government, which was, and is, in violation of the Tenth Amendment.

All states voluntarily joined the Union, and the understanding was that likewise, any state or group of states could voluntarily withdraw from that union.

What is bizarre is that the "Confederate" states were never readmitted to the Union.

Technically, we're "occupied territory." Texas was unique, for it alone of all the states was previously an independent Republic.

They have the best argument of all, for being able to "unjoin" if they so wish. And then maybe Florida could ask to be annexed by Texas, and so on, and so on.

Until we get back to following the Constitution, there is a real danger here. Nothing like pissed off Americans.

It is funny to see those who wanted Bush to give away trillions to the rich don't want Obama to use a cent on the poor.

The political and socio-economic model that defined the confederate states was one that was doomed to fail.
If this country had followed the confederate pattern of a loose federation of soverign nations , it would have ceased to be years ago.
It would have been carved up by the europeans and mexico, for the very same reasons that the north beat the south.

The fact remains, if Abraham Lincoln had not been elected we would not have had the civil war.

Im wondering if history is sort of repeating itself, will we do a civil war 2 just because Obama has been elected, or will it be because of his policies?

I think you may see people barracading themselves in foreclosed homes yelling "you'll never take me alive !" and stuff like that, more suicides, more domestic violence but I think we'll see something before a civil war

I think americans will move to US states with lower taxes and out of the country alltogether
