Today the weather is good so I am going into the woods to scout locations to make a shelter building video for youtube.

We didn't use trails just walking through the woods. Nothing major but its a start.

Today I ordered for a few books from Palaidin Press, and Been reading up on Wilderness evasion, here the link. Has a little infrmation might help some people out.

My wife and I went out to the range and tested some reloads in her 44 carbine and my pistol. Pistol shot great, 5 inches at 50 yards and the rifle was less than good 6 inches at 50.

Today i purchased an 'advanced' survival kit. It cost me £20. This item is the latest piece of equipment ticked off my 'check list'.

I'm just starting out and have decided to buy mainstream camping gear alongside 'specialist' survival equipment so that i dont throw my wife, kids and myself into the deepend on our first outing!

On a serious note, i think that people who pursue this kind of activity have nothing to lose and everything gain in an ever increasingly uncertain society.

We come on here to share and to learn, yet you clam up. Reading the other posts and ideas on this thread, leaving no ideas or thoughts of your own.

I have tried many times here to open forums where ideas and knowledge of these same ideas, about planning ahead, thinking ahead, and actually working ahead could be shared. Now another poses a similar question, and instead of trying to share and learn, you try to crush them, you fear the power of "big brother" and will not post your ideas. Shame on you.

OP. What did I do today. I made moose jerky. Should be good for a year or two. I started another batch or beer and another wine. I cut some firewood, reread Foxfire 2, and now am on here, looking for others like me. Sad as that is.

Bought me to magnesium fire starters, one to practice one for my BOB.
Bought 100 purification tablets to put up.
I know how to use a bow to start a fire, so please don't flame me.

Went to the big box type store yesterday with the jopes of buying some salmon and experimenting with some smoking/storage.

I passed on them as they just didn't look that fresh.

I am building a smoker with some wild bamboo that is growing nearby. I'll make a teepee type structure, cover that and build a rack on the inside for the fish/meats.

My sight tool arrived and I tried to use it for my .22, but it didn't work. So, I'll return that and pick up some stuff to glass-bed my other rifle.

I used up the 20 gallons of stored gas that was well more than a year old. I was impressed that my and my wifes cars didn't skip a beat with this old gas. Each 5 gal can was treated with Stabil. I'll refill this week and should be good to go for another year.

Today i've been in the garden, weeding the beds i plan to plant veg in.

All of my seeds are coming up now, i'm really enjoying what i've learnt over the past few weeks about the basics of growing food.

What has struck me the most, is that so many people will not have a clue how to fend for themselves when it comes to just food and water, people will be dropping like flies if ever there ever was a need to stop using the shops.

Spent the morning waiting on-site reading and re-reading my driver's atlas.

Have planned an alternate bug out route that should avoid all major roads and keep human contact (yeah, London? right) to a minimum.

I also checked the routes I should expect to take after that if heading toward my ideal UK destination.

Of course in case of a nuke strike or high water these routes are fubar'ed.

Today..well, this weekend, I've been grafting away with a shovel on my parents allotment whilst visiting, and learned an amazing method for urban veg gardening...

Get a couple dozen large heavy-duty builders-waste opaque plastic bags, roll down the tops, fill to 1/4 full with well manured soil and plant with seed-potatoes.

As the spud plants grow, and need 'earthing up' (as they would if planted out in the ground in rows) you roll up the bags a few inches and add a shovel-full of earth...repeat throughout the growing season and you'll have tatties fit for championship bangers n' mash!

The bonus of this method is that if your crop is in danger of being raided etc, you can load up the bags, spud plants and all, and move them all to a safe location and continue growing

I see ware you are coming from. In this case thow look back at a lot of older post. dizziedame has been a very productve part of the ATS survival forum. not sure why she clammed up on this thread but I am sure she had her reasons.

To answer the OP. I worked on my new CNC machine so When I get laid off I will have a fall back and my old machine is to weak to do much use full stuff.

Yes it is survival related. Its very hard to survive with out money, this way I will be able to make money to survive.

I am continuing work on my house. I recently purchased 10 175Watt solar panels. $600 each. That's juice for 2 homes, with backup power when sun is no longer shining. No more 300$ electric bill. That 300$ a month will go to an underground storage that I am currently in the process of digging. I have already purchased 75 halfstacked pallets of beer, 300 cases of rum, thousands of real seeds, preservatives, firecrackers, 300 gallons of cold gasoline, and two atmospheric water generators(EcoloBlue), and a large ground freezer. There is still much much more that I need. Any ideas?

Crikes thats one hell of an array for a domestic set-up!

If you're tied to the grid still, you could certainly offset the cost by selling back your surplus capacity.

Thanks. You gave me a few more details about how that is done and I have really been wanting to do that. I've been growing wheat grass for the cats but we're just getting started on our vegetable garden. It's going to be small and mostly tried and true things that I already know will grow it our soil. I'm working on composting more and more.

It could be noted that if anyone doesn't know how to compost or doesn't have the time, it certainly doesn't hurt to just throw your kitchen scraps out in the garden in an area to be used next year. Dig them in a little later or when you have time. If you're slightly more motivated, add any other organic material, yard clippings then it covered with something so it gets hot things don't grow with no light it will suppress and ruin seeds of weeds, breaks down and viola - gorgeous soil.

going to rotate the tinned foodstaffs today, puls shake up the liquids to prevent settling ( Liquid soap detergent, softener etc bought bulk, its seperates out if left standing) Time to change the water stored in the water containers and back flush the Berky.
Oddly enough I need to get more trash bags as well, buy them bulk in roles of 100, get five rolls at a time. Need more bleach, baby wipes 9 better than loo paper) and gallon containers of disinfectant. bottled gas is OK still have six full ones. May get the medical kit updated tonight.

I was going to U2U this but on reflection decided the question might be useful to a similarly informed person.

Re: Backflushing the water filter:

Excuse my ignorance would this have something to do with attaching a hose to the usual "output" end and force water through, thus forcing out debris trapped in the carbon filter?

I'm guessing it's similar to my berkey. Am I barking up the wrong tree and if I'm not how long would you advise (depending on usage and water quality of course) between each "flush"?

WoW! What a great idea! I realized the other day my 12 year old didn't know how to get out the subdivision! So, I have been picking out spots all over the city and then making my children tell me how to get home. I should have started that when she was five! It's not a forest but I figure if something happens it would be good for my children to know how to get around in the city and find their way home.

What am I doing today? I have been learning from all my survival ATS's, I have put away a few supplies and am now trying to figure out how I can make my house more secure.

Today I am planning my garden, dehydrating apples as I type, and yesterday I dehydrated tators..
