Surveillance cams help fight crime, city says

www.suntimes.com

Mayor Daley has argued that security and terrorism won’t be an issue if his Olympic dreams come true because, by 2016, there will be a surveillance camera on every street corner in Chicago.

But even before that blanket coverage begins, the “Big Brother’’ network is being put to better use.

Mmm-hmmm....

I'm sure that's ALL these cams are about.

More Big Brother, nanny-state, surveillance state nonsense being shoved down the throat of the populace.

And of course there's always the reassurances of, "there's nothing to worry about, there will be no abuses of this surveillance state blanketing of your neighborhood".

What a joke.

^_^ Maybe one day we can be just like England! Privacy? Who needs it! I would gladly sacrifice privacy for security! Then we could go ahead and get rid of our guns while we are at it!

The cameras will simply be used to keep all of Chicagoland's corrupt politicians in check.
They make the Latin Kings look like boy scouts.

I'm willing to bet that there will be a run on paintball guns in Chicago. From emails I get from friends in the UK, they are spending lots of money replacing lenses and cleaning them because people are finding ways to paint them or destroy them. I truely hope I'm right!!!

Yeah, it's worked so well over in the UK.

This is the second line of my post.

Not a bad idea! Kinda reminds me of when we would put marbles in paintball guns and shoot out street lights. Of course that was just for fun and not in protest of invasion of privacy and the such.

No guns allowed, but we will monitor your every move to keep you safe.

Is it just me or would you also pin your safety on yourself instead of Daley?

LOL!

I love it!

The UK is outta control with that surveillance state nonsense. Cameras on every damn corner.

I hope we don't fall the way of them, and if we do, I hope you're onto something Zindo.

I've said it many times - the town centre and urban CCTV systems do NOT deter a lot of crime, they simply record it for later evidential purposes in the hope the perps can be identified, in which case it'll be submitted as evidence. That is, if the bad guys are ever caught, let alone identified beyond reasonable doubt from grainy footage.
A bit like the police really. The general public deter more crime than the police do who, like the cameras, are rarely there to prevent a crime happening but arrive after the fact to begin an investigation.

At least it supplies a ceaseless amount of voyeuristic footage for all the cable tv crime programmes (gotta pay for the system somehow).

Indeed. Unless they come up with some sort of "American Cameras" that shoot out tasers and pepper spray then read you your rights as the police come to pick you up.

I always thought it was concervatives who are obsessed with population control, but it seems like it's really the socialists.

Just look at the UK, the next step for those people will be remote control units.
