Some of the ISPs selected already offer internet filtering to customers on an opt-in basis. Critics have questioned the usefulness of the trials in charting the real-world impacts of filtering because Australia's second and third largest ISPs, despite expressing a willingness to be part of the trials, have not been given a spot.
"We are still waiting for the government to show us how this controversial system of censorship will work in the real world, when experts are telling us it will be unworkable," Mr Sheikh said.
