Well fleas was defiantly the main vector back in the middle ages, well the vector that lept from the rats to the people, I think then the people could transmit it between humans all by them selves - I could be wrong.

But my point is that it could be a little complacent to take the view that it needs fleas to be transmitted - they could have a variety of methods up their sleeves - if of course there is anything nefarious about this whole thing,
