A fire killed 15 horses Thursday night at the Eckstein Farms boarding barn in the Summit area of Pierce County.
“They were all still in the stalls,” said Doug Willis, chief of Central Pierce Fire & Rescue. “We tried to get them out.”
Willis said crews arrived on the scene, at 13112 Bingham Ave. in rural Pierce County, about 7 p.m. Thursday. When flames shot through the roof, they had to call for backup. Because there was so much hay in the barn, flames were likely to smolder and crews had to stay on the scene throughout the night.
Jeremy Eckstein, who works on the farm with his family, said they couldn’t get into the barn because of how dense the smoke was. They could still hear the horses.
“We couldn’t get a foot inside the barn,” he said.
Eckstein family members were going out to feed their goats behind the house when one noticed thick smoke coming out of their barn. Others rushed out, slid open the large door and saw the orange glow of fire inside Eckstein said.
By the time fire crews made it inside, flames had spread through the roof and there was no visibility, so going inside to save the horses was out of the question, he said.
By the time crews made it in, all 15 horses in the boarding barn had died.
