lol, you people who whine and cry about secondhand smoke crack me up. You do realize it takes the act of smoking 1 pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years to become a cancer case right? Also weight, diabetes, heart disease, etc are caused by long term tobacco use. your irrational fear of momentary exposure once a in a great while is very amusing to me. its like being scared of how much radiation your casually exposed to a day.

you inhale more pollutants in a day than you do the evil cigarette smoke! So unless your huddled next to a smoker huffing down that smoke hard every day for year, rest assured that the evil cigs did not cause you a problem.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that, if that wasn't the case, the US would be a smoke free zone right now.

Am I right in thinking America was built on Cotton, Tobacco and a few other murky commodities??

I feel I maybe should not hit the 'post reply' button on this one.....

I started a thread about the images on tobacco packets.

How do these images make you feel about smoking?

It links in quite well with this thread.

When I was in Philadelphia 2 years ago, they had just passed a law banning all smoking in clubs and bars.

So much for your freedom...

It is also against the law in California we cant even smoke within 500feet of any parks (kid or non kid) or 1000 ft of any hospitals. If we are caught driving while smoking with a kid in the car there will be a $250 dollar fine and a court date the first time. I cant even remember what the second and third one where but its bad.
I am not sure that no ads would fly in the USA, all small business' that sell cigarettes are required to have a certain number of ads placed. If they refuse the price of cigs goes up and they get no deals. Second time of refusing they are dropped. Sad but true fact I hate it none the less but hey the EU is the practice ground for the world right now. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure that one out. All you have to do is look at how litte freedom those poor people have with anything in their lives.

I'm a smoker, no denying that! I had a quick trip around google images and pulled up the images that are appearing on tobacco products in the UK (I believe the 1st of Oct was when they started)

and a collection of all of them...

I thought this would go nicely along side the Ban on tobacco displays announced thread.

Thoughts?

Canada has the same thing here as the UK on our cigarette packages. According to Health Canada, the images displayed on packages must be at least 50% of the package surface.

Link to Canada tobacco packaging images

Also, in Alberta, it is illegal for tobacco products to be displayed in any business that sells tobacco products. (this went in to effect just within the last year)

You also can't smoke in any public place, including drinking establishments. If you want to smoke outside the establishments door, you must be 5 metres from the door.

I think vehicles with children under the age of 16 will be next too. It's already law in one town here in Alberta.

edited to add:

I forgot to mention, I can't speak for the rest of Canada, but here in Alberta I pay on average 12 dollars CDN for a pack of 25 smokes.

The danger with preventing tobacco products from being displayed in retail outlets, is that baccy will go underground, and bootleggers and smugglers will be the main beneficiaries.

When Tony Blair was elected as Prime Minister of Britain, he banned people from owning firearms, as a firearms certificate holder killed people at Dunblane. Most shooters were people who did it for the sport in licensed ranges, and many had to give it up. It was banned due to failure by the authorities in the client vetting procedures. Now there is a vast quantity of unlicensed guns in the UK, and as they are illegal, nobody knows who owns them; they are underground.

As an ex-smoker, ex-drinker and ex- pistol shooter, I'm all for people giving up smoking, or never smoking in the first place, but putting baccy under the counter won't prevent people smoking. There are social issues involved with why people smoke, and they too may find themselves driven underground with their habit.

The British Government proved itself negligent with relaxed alcohol licensing hours and look at the vast health and social problems that decision caused. I've no doubt that this latest regulation with tobacco will be equally stupid in its own way.
