After watching 'V for Vendetta' last night (which subsequently gave me V-mania hence the avatar) I decided to look up the wikipedia article on Guy Fawkes night. I read something that made me sad for the Aussies over the ditch (I'm a kiwi).

Anyway I saw this in the article.

Bonfire Night was celebrated in Australia until the mid to late 1970s, when sale and public use of fireworks was made illegal and the celebration was effectively abolished.
Wikipedia

In New Zealand we celebrate Guy Fawkes like Americans celebrate Halloween, hard core. We love Guy Fawkes even more than our own holidays like Waitangi Day (our equivalent of the US 4th of July).

Any Aussies on here who remember/miss celebrating the foiled gunpowder plot?

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
