Subliminal messages have gotten lots of people in trouble, if there is no consensus that it works, why all the madness about the "RATS" scandal. There was also a case that used "Im Hungry" wording in pre trailer ads in a movies during the 1950's that showed increases in purchases of concessions.

I have done a few presentations on their effectiveness, and often it isn't whether they get the intended goal of you purchasing the product, but that they get into your subconsious and make the product at hand more easily remembered at awkward times. Ie if you are in the checkout line and see a pack of gum and associate it very strongly due to some sort of subliminal used, and therefore are tempted to purchase it.

I reccomend the book "The Clam Plate Orgy" as it discusses some of this, but I will post more related info if anyone is interested.
