HOUSTON (Reuters) - Explosions and fire rocked BP Plc's refinery and chemical plant complex in Texas City, Texas, on Tuesday evening, Houston-area
television stations reported.
No injuries were reported from the large fire, which was reported at about 7:20 p.m. CST (8:20 p.m. EST). Residents of Texas City, about 30 miles
south of Houston, were told to remain in their homes due to dense smoke from the flames.
BP Texas City has a 447,000-barrel-per-day refinery. It is the 12th-largest refinery in the world.
Houston-area television stations reported other nearby refineries were being evacuated. Texas City is home to a 72,000-barrel-a-day refinery operated
by Marathon Ashland Petroleum and a 210,000 barrel-a-day refinery operated by Valero Energy Corp.
