Who Benefits?

I am a newer resident in NY state and have a question. I have heard both sides of this argued to me and I have not researched it yet on my own. I wanted to solicit opinions first before deciding whether this was worth researching.

Who benefits more -- NY state or NYC?
- There are those who say that the rest of NY pays higher taxes because we support NYC.

-There are those who say that argument is wrong because NYC pays higher taxes to support NY state. Without NYC tax revenue we would all be paying higher sales and property taxes.

I'm really interested in your thoughts as I file my returns and contemplate my current level of taxation in this state. I love this state so far but everything costs more. I knew this coming in but you don't really fathom it until you're seeing less pay every other week.
