The first flight test of the russian hypersonic flying vehicle GLL-31 will be carried out sometime this year

this flight test is similar to that of the american X-43 hypersonic vehicle which was first tested almost three years ago (but failed) the second test was successful, GLL-31 was first revealed on MAKS-97 international airshow, but unlike its western counterpart, gll-31 wont be wasted into the ocean but safely parachuted.

original story (on russian) ]Original Story Snippet

the GLL-31 will be carried by the MiG-31, which accelerates it to the speed of approximately mach 2+. at that stage, the GLL-31 is separated from the carrier aircraft and with the aid of the solid-propellant engine is accelerated to the speed Of mach=10, at which during 30-60 seconds the HYPERSONIC RAMJET ENGINE will work.
Story Body
we will conduct the tests of experimental hypersonic ramjet engine, said V.Skibin. According to him, the hypersonic flying laboratory GLL-31 was developed for the tests of hydrogen and hydrocarbon hypersonic ramjet engines (GPVRD - HYPERSONIC RAMJET ENGINE) in flight at the speed from 2 to 8,5 M+, the Mach number, equal to the speed of sound. Contemporary combat aircraft fly only at the speed of mach 2/3+.

According to the information Of v.Skibina, the GLL-31 modular GPVRD - HYPERSONIC RAMJET ENGINE flying laboratory has rectangular cross section. It passed a series of the ground tests (several tens of tests) on the stand of scientific test center TSIAM Turayevo (Moscow region). it makes it possible to test the GLL-31 under the terrestrial conditions in the free airstream at the speed equal to 7 M and more director general said.

That's true, but so was the X-43.

It was more of a small aircraft with an engine than a engine with few control surfaces on it.

Sector,
I notice that the original article you linked to in Russian was dated August 2003.
Are there any updates on that project that you can find?

Becuase we dont need the vehicle. There are many sensors on the X-43 itself and they can transmit data.
