NATO: Troops can target Afghan drug operations

NATO defense ministers Friday authorized their troops in Afghanistan to attack drug barons blamed for pumping up to $100 million a year into the coffers of resurgent Taliban fighters.

Troops will only be able to act against drug facilities if authorized by their own governments; only drug producers deemed to be supporting the insurgency will be targeted; and the operation must be designed to be temporary _

I can only describe this as window dressing. The opium harvest and delivery are over for the year, and now they want to interdict?

Also, the $100 million figure that is supposedly going to the Taliban is a drop in the bucket compared to the total cash value of the Afghanistan opium crop.

Witness the restrictions placed on the Nato effort in the second paragraph of the snippet above. That says more about the real intention of this plan than anything else, imo.
