The US House of Representatives has voted in favour of a landmark nuclear deal between India and the US.
President George Bush will sign the new bill into law once it is through the Senate for final approval.
Indian PM Manmohan Singh, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly, said India could now take its place in the world nuclear order.
Critics say it creates a dangerous precedent and will give India the means to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring it to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, as other nations have.
In return, Delhi would open its civilian nuclear facilities to inspection, but its nuclear weapons sites would remain restricted.
