Russia plans own nuclear umbrella

news.bbc.co.uk

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has announced plans to build a "guaranteed nuclear deterrent system" to be in place by 2020.

He said he wanted military chiefs to submit plans by December.

He called for a programme to build new nuclear submarines as well as "a system of aerospace defence".

The announcement comes just weeks after Russia accused America of starting a new arms race by siting part of its missile defence shield in Poland.

Looks like the Cold War 2 has gone up a gear....

Although, I thought that Russia was already engaging in building new SLBMs and I thought their ABM system was much more developed and extensive then anything the West had to offer.

I wonder how many more SLBMs the Russians are planning on building - they have only launched one new boat and most of the Delta IIIs are nearly ready for the scrapyard....

I think this is just more rhetoric from Moscow - nothing new there......

If this is an "arms race" then we poked em' in the eye and took off running. Poor little Russia just standing there with hurt feelings. Then Russia turns to it's little brother Georgia and slugs him in the shoulder giving him a charlie horse....
