I was just doing some light reading on wikipedia and I came across an order I haven't heard of before, which claims to predate and may have contributed to the foundation of Freemasonry:

Society of Unknown Philosophers

Has anyone heard of it? I can't really find any information about it.

Can you post the wikipedia link too? A search didn't lead to any results...

This group probably wishes to connect itself with the Fama Fraternitatis, a document that appeared in the capitals of Europe in the 17th century, announcing a secret order that was intent on causing a rebirth of human reason.

The term "unkown philosophers" is, I think, a literal translation of a phrase used in the book to mean anonymous sages who were working behind the scenes to reform human society.

Generally considered an elaborate hoax. launched the Rosicrucian movement. Google the Fama F., since the Wikipedia entry is limited and contains errors.

all the best.
