It's unfortunate, but this thread has evolved into a mess, and it's time to close it.

I'll leave you all with a couple simple thoughts on this action of ours.

Just as there are numerous destinations where one can childishly slag about with vulgarities and brag about recent extravagances with their biggest-baddest bong, there are numerous venues where you can entertain yourself with focusing on insulting and screaming at those on the opposite side of the political spectrum from you. If these new guidelines upset you, then you'll be much happier posting on one of those other sites.

Since early 2003, when Simon and I first realized we had the genesis of something unique here, we've constantly strived to foster an environment where members feel encouraged to aspire to high standards of conduct and conversation. Sometimes we've stumbled in those efforts, but most times we've succeeded far beyond our expectations. We will go our own way, the way we feel is right, the way we believe may make some small difference.

Even after this high-profile announcement and a follow-up U2U reminder, we're still seeing new threads (from members who should now know better) focusing completely on candidate character assassination attempts or without any basis in their platforms.

New Threads about 2008 candidates must be based on their published platform issues, or that of their respective parties. New threads that don't comply are subject to immediate removal. Members who continually seek to challenge these new guidelines, no matter what political affiliation is involved, will be subject to account termination.
