this is one of those oh-so-sensitive pointed questions that most people would never directly ask nor answer in person. i would, and have, and do, but most people wouldn't. so let me ask it here, on the internet:


whom are you supporting in the presidential election and does obama's race play a factor?

my answer:

mccain and yes, it does play some role in my decision but i would have supported mccain against any democrat.

I would say yes it does. I'm an Obama supporter, and I feel that both the candidates bring something special to this race. On McCains side, This guy was a Prisoner of War (POW), has been a Senator for 24 years, and now is running for President in his 70's when most people are touring the country in an RV (Well, maybe not this summer). This man is dedicated.

Obama, has had the extrememly unique fortune of having such a diverse background that he didn't fit in completely enough in any group that he adapted and learned how to connect with people from many different walks of life. He has parlayed this into the ability to inspire people to action. He has high ideals and believes strongly in the ability of the people in this country. This man is also dedicated.

Now back to the original topic. Obama's Race plays a huge role in that paragraph I wrote about him. As much a role as McCain's being a POW plays in my respect for him.

I will say that if you are talking about race as far as dealing with different races then I will say it does matter and both candidates have demonstrated that throughout their political careers. Quaz did a great job on the paragraph he wrote about Obama concerning this.

Now if you are talking solely about the color of his skin then I will say no. I don't care what color a candidate is. If he or she knows how to lead, can lead by example, and is willing to put the peoples interest first then I will vote for that person regardless of the color of their skin. Obama nor McCain fits this bill, but that is a different story.

Obama/McCain's skin could be tourquoise...I could care less. What I DO care about is what they stand for. Personally, I don't trust any of 'em...I think all politicians have hidden agendas...to screw us over. But I can hope! All I know is, we CANNOT have another 8 years of a living hell as we have had with Bush. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but McCain seems like a clone to Bush! Anyone think the same thing?

i think skin color definitely matters, especially when you consider obama's ties to radical black activism and his wife's anti-american sentiments. i feel like obama would always be trying to overcompensate for what he views as centuries of institutionalized racism and that makes him a dangerous radical, no matter how moderate the views he preaches might be. moreover i would fear for obama's safety were he elected, and the last thing this country needs right now is a repeat of the kennedy '63 fiasco.

the office of the president doesn't mean all that much these days, considering how many decisions are made by people who will never have to stand for election. but as a figurehead, mccain is far preferable to obama.

besides that, mccain earned it. he's sacrificed for his country whereas obama has always been given an essentially free ride. i can tell you as someone who has worked in the government and who now works in politics, no candidate has ever been given this much of a free ride by the msm during a presidential election cycle.

No it doesnt matter to me, but it matters to a lot of people.

Its not his race that bothers me, but instead his past of hatred of "white folks".

I appreciate you asking this question. Because I believe possibly having the first black president is a BIG DEAL in this country. And race IS going to play a part. The part it plays will make a statement about who we are as a country.

I am supporting Obama and while the color of his skin doesn't matter to me, the fact that he has a different perspective on civil rights and equality DOES matter to me. And to the extent that his perspective is due to having lived his life as a mixed race person, then yes, it does matter. Because I am interested in someone who has a different perspective. Not because I necessarily want a president with a dark pigment.

I used to think that race was a big issue for Republicans, but I'm coming to understand that for most Republicans, it's not really race that is the issue, but political party. For example, if Condi Rice or Colin Powell was the Republican nominee and, say Joe Biden, the Democrat, would their race play a part? I doubt it.

This is a curious subject for me because I have been puzzled by people who claim that Obama's race doesn't matter, yet they don't want him to be president because he's a Muslim, he hates America, he refuses to wear a flag pin, and he's a socialist. Since NONE of those are true, I USED to think that obviously, his race is the problem.

But I now realize it's simply because he's a Democrat and they're playing the "election game" and they want their team to win. The more they can slam the "other team", the better chance they have of "winning". I think that's probably closest to the truth for most Obama-haters. Like you said, race may play a part, but they would vote for anyone to keep a Democrat from winning.

I could care less what race or color he is, it's his past associations and poor judgement that concerns me. I frankly don't want a President that associates with domestic terrorists like Bill Ayres or racist like Jeremiah Wright.

Add to the above, his questionable activities with slumlords like Tony Rezko, his wife's lack of pride in our country, and his self-disclosed use of street drugs, and I believe you have a man that is definitely unqualified to occupy the Oval Office.

I haven't even addressed his lack of other qualifications. He's a novice when it comes to politics, and his positions on vital issues change like the direction of the wind, or more accurately, like the opinion polls.

I think there are many out there who feel as you do. The fact that over 90% of Black Americans voted for him in the primaries attest to this. His positions on the issues were only slightly different than Hillary, so I don't know what else could account for the disparity in the voting aside from Hillary being a female possibly.

Obama is all about race. And yes it does matter to me, and I would never vote for him because he is just so "black".

Now Collin Powell, totally different. He does not have the race card taped to his forehead.

I am writing in Ron Paul. Race isn't the overwhelming factor for why I am not voting for Obama. It is bc he is a socialist and I am a constitutionalist.

Realize there are plenty of white nationalists that would LOVE to see Obama in office. Their theory is "worse is better". On that note I do expect regardless of whether he wins or loses, there will be rioting in some cities. Course if he wins the media will downplay it.

I don't feel it does in Obama's case.
He is not Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.
Obama is a man of Mixed heritage not 'one race' he may appear darker but he is not 100% african american nor caucasian, although the african heritage is what stands out. he is very well spoken educatd and charismatic. I still don't approve of his junior senator status and glob trotting behavior- he is not president yet and he certainly could use a bit more experience in toto.

I like Obama personally, also his looks and style. Also, the fact that he´s black would be a welcome change.

But Im not voting for him because of his politics.

I ma voting against Obama by voting for McCdemocrat.
