An estimated 9.4 million motorists will have to pay more road tax in 2010-11 under reforms aimed at punishing "gas-guzzling" vehicles, ministers admit.

Money grabbing. The Olympics are bankrupting them.

They're saying they're raising these taxes to get people to buy new, smaller, greener cars. This adjustment to the tax system is also RETROSPECTIVE, and hits cars bought after 2001.

Here's the catch: if CO2 really is affecting the climate as it is preached all the time, just how much CO2 will be chucked out in producing new cars and scrapping the old vs. just carrying on running the current cars?

7 years isn't really all that old in the scheme of things.

At a time when people are struggling to pay the bills etc.. and are struggling in the face of rising fuel bills, just what are they trying to achieve here??

IMHO this whole thing is out of control on a global scale.

Global Warming/Climate Change/whatever is purely to make money.

How so?

Explain your reasoning please, I could do with a larf....

But, the tax issue is typical brown behaviour. Stealth tax the people to the hilt. Never mind though, the Tories will be in next election and I'm sure there will be a nice raft of tax cuts (and hopefully spending cuts) to go with them.

How? Simple - it's costing £9 Billion and we can't afford it.

We're giving hundreds of millions of pounds away to other countries whilst hiking taxes and getting nothing in return.

The UK recently said it would give hundreds of millions of pounds to Zimbabwe if it sorted itself out. WTF? Sort my country out first!!

Just where is all the money going that we pay in taxes every year? I remember... it's on all those MPs expenses...

£9 billion over several years is chump change for the Government. Have you any idea of how much money the Government spends each year?

We're not going to go bankrupt over a few stadiums and a bit of Urban regen.

However, I agree that taxes are too high.

At a time when the Government knows we're all tightening our belts, maybe they should do the same.

Stop giving worthless scumbags money and houses for starters. Make the "unemployed" go to work. Ship out all the Polish so that the 1.6 Million unemployed in the UK can go and get a job. If there are no jobs for them, put them to work on the roads, railways and cleaning hospitals. Want some benefits? Then off to work with you!!

But this is all stereotypical Labour policy. Spend, tax, spend.... Got a problem, throw money at or failing that, tax it.

About £400 Billion.

Well, as a result of the following two changes alone:

Scrapping the 10p tax band: £7.4 Billion
Raising Road Tax: £1 Billion

They've raised an additional £8.4 Billion (or nearly 2%).

They bailed out Northern Rock to the tune of ~£120 Billion. They then tried to fiddle the books so it didn't look like a loss, but if you or I did that to our books, we'd be jailed for fraud/tax evasion/etc!
