No Ice at the North Pole by this Summer

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally icefreeNorth Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by hugeswathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.

Weather or not you believe global warming is due to human output of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, this is a pressing and serious issue and needs to be addressed.

With all this sea ice melting, what is going to happen to the gulf stream?Apparently adding great ammounts of fresh water (as from the arctic ice) will slow and eventually stop the gulf stream which brings warm water up from the equator an brings warmth to Europe and North America.

What can be done? Is it past the point of no return? Or will the shutdown of the gulf stream take us back to an ice age fixing the climate that way?

If the Gulf Stream shuts down we are in Big trouble. If it is caused by man its irony that the Western world would be effected the most. It can be said we brought it on ourselves.

hey they're already trying to own that land, put 2 and 2 together, it wouldn't be far from the truth that different countries are melting it all to open up new territory.

Groenland litterally means Green Land : no ice upon it in middleage...
