I have recently begun having problems with a program/popup that is very annoying. The name of the site is pcoptimizer.com.... It pops up randomly, and asks you if you want a scan. Any way out, including hitting Cancel or the Red X in the corner, shuts down Firefox.

I cannot figure out how to block this program. Any ideas?

Run the adblock plus plugin, It's on the firefox website. There are a lot of great plugins for Firefox.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. That ad is such a damn annoyance; I'll be glad to get rid of it.

First off this might already be installed or at least hijacked your browser.Esp when you see it all the time. You dont need ccleaner or adblocker that wont do anything.Download and install first a good antivirus if you don't already have one. Then download a good antispyware.one that you dont have to pay for, cause freee it better then paying.Run a complete scan. Its most likely a trojan from reading some info on it.

Sounds like a virus or atleast something malicious. Do what they suggest, with ad-aware and spybot.

Opera doesn't give you ANY adds or viruses either.

But also create your own hosts file. You can search for pre-made ones which block almost all adds or make your own, or edit a pre-made one and then use that.

vlaurie.com...

But renember to keep the ATS adds!

The triple threat!!

Very good advice. If you can tell if the site has a flash portions you could install the firefox add-on that blocks flash unless you want it. Sometimes flash will freak out Firefox if you try to stop it mid 'load'.

you can also try to change your host table to point pcoptimizer.com to 127.0.0.1 (local host), but that might not work if the popup or program is using the IP address instead of host name..

Just throwing ideas out there.

wow this seems to be an epidemic

I just had something called performance optimizer do basically the same thing jsobecky was describing, pops up and takes over.

I have ad aware and run it frequently, also have PCCillin antivirus 07 edition with an aoutoscan nightly fully updated.

Somehow it seems that I have been compromised...

I halted the internet traffic as this THING was trying to go here:

//WARNING DO NOT GO TO THIS ADDRESS//

I am just posting in case someone recognizes this, it could be some kind of crazy malware:

ed:had to break up the addy so I stop the page skew

and this is the relevant details from the adaware scan:

I got rid of those but I am wondering if it is something that could still be creeping around waiting to launch again?

Anyone heard of this particular issue?
