House speaker asks Bush to stop stockpiling oil

Democrats in the Senate are also pursuing legislation that would require the Energy Department to suspend shipments to the reserve if prices are too high.

Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota said he would seek to attach an amendment to an upcoming supplemental appropriations bill that would forbid the government from sending oil to the SPR if oil prices are above $75 a barrel.

Don't most people stockpile supplies when prices are rising and showing no signs of declining anytime soon? It's irresponsible of anyone to suggest we stop building that reserve at anytime, let alone at a time like this. All it would take is one major disaster or a major global disruption and suddenly we're completely dependent upon those reserves.

As it stands right now the reserve contains enough oil to run the nation at its current usage rate for just over 1 month. IMHO that's very inadequate.
