Allowable post length?

Does the allowed length of posts increase over time or something, or was this an across the board thing? Or am i making this up lol.

I seem to remember having an allowed length of 3000 but just now it said 6500.

I believe some of the numbers have been updated since, but it gives you an idea how they increase as your post number increases.
