RAF Tornado fighters have been scrambled after two long-range Russian "Blackjack" bombers were spotted approaching British airspace, the MoD has said.

The two strategic Tu-160 bombers were escorted by British and Norwegian fighters as they headed south for the Bay of Biscay where the Russian Navy is conducting a major exercise.

An MoD spokesman said it was a "routine" response by the RAF fighters to the presence of the Russian aircraft.

"When military aircraft are around, we monitor them," the spokesman said.

The latest incident follows the resumption last summer of long-range bomber patrols by the Russians, which has seen RAF fighters scrambled on a number of occasions.

Hmm not good,

I know everyone says not to be to worried about all this with Russia but one cant help but think that at some point them may just do something,

It was only last week they stated that they would use a nuclear bomb if they felt threatened,

I really no nothing about these affairs but does make me a little nervous,

Would they really grow the hoo harrs to carry something like this out one day?

i am pretty sure if they crossed into UK air space they would have warning shots fired on them to be escorted back out? if they continued after that they would surely be shot out of the sky?

Russians have toyed with Alaska air space more then once recently. We have had to escort/chase them off. Its keeping our jets on high alert.

It seems a pretty reasonable response to NATO and US/UK aggression. Especially with this Kosovo independence situation, the missle "defense shield", and the reduction of the Eastern European buffer zone. Also must keep in mind that before the Russians made their statement about pre-emptive nuclear strikes NATO made their own statement about pre-emptive nuclear strikes.

I think this is about Kosovo/NATO issues and US/Iran issues. The Russians can't have the West gumming up their business. Imagine if Putin was in Panama telling them they were going to Nuke Mexico! We'd have a problem with that, eh? Or if the Warsaw Pact was advocating the independence of Wales. Or California.

The sabres are rattling like crazy on all sides. Once you read into it though it becomes clear who the problem really is (Hint: It's not the Russians, yet)

You would think that US and its allies never train their military in international waters. That is all Russia is doing. Maybe it is sending some message too, but primarily this is much-needed training for military personel.

The only reason why the media in UK are blowing this way out of proportion, and making it seem like poor old UK is under imminent attack, is because that fits into the rhetoric of your politicians. The last thing UK needs to worry about is Russians bombing London and Red Army paratroopers landing in Scotland.

It would be the most greatest mistake to ever land Russian or any other foreigners military invasion of the U.K. Simply because in most parts that are 99.9% hard british values, would chop every head of enemy.

From outside the U.K, its seen in a different light, were seen as softy touch. That is the biggest mistake. For example, i was in a pub in a northern town called Barnsley and a Polish guy who did not speak english thought he was going to be killed. Barnsley is known through out the country as a caucasian foundation. The very heart of Britain, the very heart of passion in Britain.

You shall see the start of a civil war in the most unlikely of places, Yorkshire, known for racial riots. The russians would not survive in scotland, not many people run in the uk when there country is invaded.

The British don't care.

I've been in pubs in Barnsley and the only passion I've ever seen is when they call last orders.
