The National Archives released more than 10,000 pages of documents from the Nixon presidency on Wednesday and among them are the urgings of past and present FBI agents and other interested citizens to appoint Felt, then the No. 2 FBI official, as director. Associates described his "outstanding loyalty."

Felt felt (pun intended) snubbed by the Nixon administration for the FBI Director job when J. Edgar Hoover died. As the number two guy at the FBI, Felt believed he would be the successor to Hoover. Instead, Nixon put one of "his men" in the spot, Patrick Gray. Perfect motivation for using deep throat to get back at the administration.

The documents also offer other bits of interesting information, including plans for the middle east. Even apparent alarm caused by Israeli nuclear power!
