For three hours a mysterious cloud of acrid smoke hovered over some of London’s busiest streets. As shoppers ran coughing and spluttering for cover, police sealed off three roads and evacuated homes and businesses in the heart of Soho, fearing a chemical attack or a dangerous toxic leak.

As the ambulance service sent in its Hazardous Area Response Team Unit, firefighters wearing specialist breathing apparatus entered the deserted streets to seek out the source.

Soon after 7pm on Monday they emerged from the smoke carrying a huge cooking pot containing about 9lb of smouldering dried chillies.

I like spicey food. In fact I ate some tonight. I'm not I'd be dipping too many prawn crackers into a dip that when prepared puts out fumes that has shoppers panicking and the Hazmat Squad responding.

Ah, who am I kidding? I'd be dipping away, probably with tears streaming down my face. The stuff actually sounds damn good.

It is damned good. I posted the following in the other thread, I'll post an edited version again here, since it's about food and cooking.

It's called sambal belacan (Sum-BHAL buh-LA-chaan)

And I can certainly understand the panic; when that thing is frying (while it's being made) it really is quite a potent, strange smell and will hurt your eyes and make you sneeze uncontrollably. I personally gotta rush out for fresh air if someone in the house is making it.

Various versions of the same type of dip:

If you look for sambal belacan on Google you'll find tons of different recipes. I can't tell you which is the best because it's very subjective. I myself am not that fussy -- as long as it burns my tongue I'm game
