Google sponsors 30-million-dollar prize for moon shot

San Francisco - Internet giant Google announced a 30- million-dollar prize Thursday for a team that manages to send an unmanned buggy to the moon and

Now maybe we'll finally get to clearly see some of those structures John Lear's always talking about.

Bonus prizes will be won by successfully completing additional
mission tasks such as roving longer distances ( > 5,000 meters), imaging
man made artifacts (e.g. Apollo hardware), discovering water ice, and/or
surviving through a frigid lunar night (approximately 14.5 Earth days).
The competing lunar spacecraft will be equipped with high-definition video
and still cameras, and will send images and data to Earth, which the public
will be able to view on the Google Lunar X PRIZE website.
Too bad there's no prize for artifacts of a non-man-made nature, eh, Mr. Lear?

Or maybe some clear photographic evidence to back up John Lear's assertion that there's already a permanent presence on the moon.
Those doctored pics of NASA's are giving me fits!
Although it's hard to deny there's evidence of something BIG moving in these shots from his site "The Living Moon."

Actually, we may find out sooner.
The Japanese just got their Selene probe launched after years of delays:

And the Chinese have a lunar mission planned before the end of the year as well.

I'm with Project_Silo on this one i don't believe we will see any structures ot 'soul catchers' up there on the big cheese!
It'd would be pretty awesome if we did though hehe.

i wouldn't count on the japanese government or any other government to distribute information freely, they will act just like nasa.
the google x prize will be our only chance for freely distibuted information...if the U.S. government doesn't interfere.

I'm not sure they could interfere at all, it's in the public domain now the way space research and travel should have been, Nasa are hopeless and
pretty much fund missions that do not capture the imagination of the people of the world. No wonder people lost interest in space travel, Kennedy
inspired with missions to the moon, Nasa with probes to discover atmosphere's of gas giants we could never land on grrrrr.
lol anyone with me on this one? Nasa sucks..

its funny, when this project and others bring back data that says the apollo stuff is there, and there are no little green men, there will be claims
of cover ups and conspiracy from the moon hoax camps etc
never underestimate the emotional connections people make to their beliefs.
even when we start mining the moon for H3, the rumors will never go away

Absolutley superb idea. We can access god knows how many earth based webcams all over the world via the internet.
How about a moon based webcam facing earth or at intervals scanning the lunar surface that we could all log onto any time.
Do you realise how much money could be made from that. You could charge for an annual subscription to this camera (Or cameras) propbably like £20 a
year and i would imagine millions would subscribe

Be a real pain if (more like when) something goes wrong with the camera. Would probably work great for the first couple weeks, but constant cosmic
ray bombardment will take its toll eventually, especially if the equipment was off-the-shelf and not radiation hardened. Better have redundant
everything; power supply, communications, camera, cooling, etc.
