Iran shuts 'Western' barber shops

news.bbc.co.uk

Iranian police have closed more than 20 barbers' shops in the capital Tehran.

The authorities say the barbers were encouraging un-Islamic behaviour by offering Western hairstyles, tattooing and also eyebrow-plucking for men.

The move is part of an annual campaign against what is known locally as bad hijab, or un-Islamic clothing, that this year is also targeting men.

This really seems a bit too extreme - controlling how your citizens decide to look and dress. Is there no freedom in that country...?

It's shocking isn't? Thank heavens we don't go in for that kind of repression in Western Europe eh?

Lo and behold, such unwelcoming western behavior tattooing?, eyebrow trimming? and western haircuts?

Probably the hair coloring was getting to them too to go with the stylish western garbs.

That is different because there is an element of security risk, amongst other things. And if you notice the proposed ban only covered certain locations and certain head dresses. Ones that covered your entire head, effectively concealing your identity. Those are the more extreme forms of Burqa head ware. Still, completely baning haircuts, facial appearances and body image for the purpose of it being too "un-Islamic" is a different ballpark altogether.

But who cares really? It's not like they closed down every barber shop.
