Some of these are already listed but for me....

REM- Everybody Hurts
Garth Brooks- The Dance
The Used- On My Own
Better Than Ezra- Desperately Wanting
Dishwalla- Counting Blue Cars
The Verve Pipe- The Freshmen
The Tragically Hip- 38 Years Old
Live- Lightning Crashes
Soul Asylum- Runaway Train
Blue Rodeo- Lost Together

And #1 on this list for me....

Johnny Cash- Hurt (NIN cover)

Cash's version of this song is STUNNING. His voice doesn't just say the words. It feels them. It acts them out. If you didn't know a single word of english, you would still understand the gist of the song as Cash sings it. And the video stops me in my tracks and chokes me up every single time I see it. Breathtaking.

Kate Bush - This woman's work
www.imeem.com...

Of all the things we should've said,
That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

this list should be centered around trent reznor of NIN. nobody does it better than him, i suggest getting the albums
The Downward Spiral
The Fragile
With Teeth

not only our his lyrics meaningful there awfully depressing, there not cheesy either, plus no-one can duplicate his sound, its easily the best depressing stuff out there

Another one from childhood..
Daddy dont you walk so fast by wayne newton

The love between the two of us was dying
And it got so bad I knew I had to leave
But halfway down that highway when I turned around I saw
My little daughter running after me
Crying

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

Now, it broke my heart to tell my little daughter
That her daddy had to run to catch a train
She had no way of knowin' I was leavin' home for good
I turned around and there she was again
As she said to me

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

If only for the sake of my sweet daughter
I just had to turn back home right there and then
And try to start a new life with the mother of my child
I couldn't bear to hear those words again
She cried and said

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
(My daughter cried)
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Oh, daddy, don't you walk so fast

There are quite a few songs that I can name, but the one that first comes to mind would be A.R. Rabman - Mumbai Theme Tune. I am unsure if this song was named earlier as I have not the time to peruse the entire thread, but if so, my apologies.

Not so sure about sad, the words to me don't really sound sad...well...I guess they could depending on the situation, but I've found that I've teared up a bit at the sound of DJ Shah's remake of Sky Falls Down by Oceanlab. Still decoding that one.

Sayonara Solitare is a heartbreaking sounding song too, by Saeko Chiba.

I'm suprised no one mentioned John Waite's Missing You either.
