Foreign woman kidnapped in Kabul

news.bbc.co.uk

A foreign woman has been kidnapped at gunpoint in the heart of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Reports say she was at a restaurant with her partner when armed men walked in and took her away.

The incident comes amid efforts to free 19 South Korean aid workers kidnapped by the Taleban in central Afghanistan.

This is apparently the first foreign kidnapping in Afghanistan's capital in nearly two years, which makes this case a bit peculiar.

Hopefully the motive behind this will be found out soon enough.

Pregnant hostage freed after raid

The hostage was a pregnant German woman who has now been freed by a police raid on the kidnappers building:

A pregnant German woman abducted by gunmen in Afghanistan was freed late last night, hours after she appeared in a video asking for help.

Christina Meier, 31, was released after police carried out a raid on the building used by the kidnappers. Her abduction was the first of a Westerner in the Afghan capital two years.

News of the police operation will come as welcome relief to the thousands of international workers living in Kabul. The community has been gripped with fear since Ms Meier was snatched on Saturday afternoon.

At least she was freed unharmed and okay. But I still don't think there is a reason to her kidnapping, although here is what one of the kidnappers had to say:

One of the kidnappers, a man wearing sunglasses with his head covered by a scarf said: “We are not bad people. We are a special network.” Earlier yesterday local police said that they did not believe the gang holding Ms Meier were Taleban insurgents.

I don't know how they can claim that they're not bad people. Kidnapping someone is bad enough, but kidnapping a pregnant woman is even worse..
