Almost 42 years after they were killed in the Gang Toi Hills, Lance Corporal Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson were last night on their way home.
The assault on a Viet Cong stronghold 50 kilometres outside Saigon had been poorly planned. An understrength Australian company of infantry went over a crest and into an ambush. Well-concealed Viet Cong strafed them with machine-guns.
"It was like a dark cloud descended on the whole regiment," said Jim Bourke, then a young officer with 1RAR.

This is something along the lines of what has been happening to the remains of Americans who have been found and returned in recent times. While not having the diggers remains must have been painful to the family's at the time the deceased may not have gotten the respect they deserve due to the radical anti war movement of the time.

The thing worth noting is that the failure to recover the two body's meant that Australian forces no longer came under direct American control.

Words to the traditional memorial for fallen soilders "Last Post"

Come home! Come home! The last post is sounding

for you to hear. All good soldiers know very well there

is nothing to fear while they do what is right, and forget

all the worries they have met in their duties through the

year. A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a

gentleman and he can be a right good pal to his comrades in

his squad. So all you soldiers listen to this – Deal fair by all

and you’ll never be amiss.

Be Brave! Be Just! Be Honest and True Men
