Japanese motorists may one day pump their cars full of sake, the fermented rice wine that is Japan's national drink.

From reuters article:

The government-funded project at Shinanomachi, 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of Tokyo, will produce cheap rice-origin ethanol brew with the help of local farmers who will donate farm waste such as rice hulls to be turned into ethanol.

Well it gives new meaning to the phrase "drink driving"

Hope this works out well, and saves them money too. Money they pay to big oil companies. I'm sure these farmers and their families need it more.

I hear ya! but making the fuel as you drive, and carrying stored fuel are two different things.

The only way to go with hydrogen (water) powered cars is to make it as you need it otherwise you would need a tanker sized fuel tank! Pressure tanks have their limits.

Gas (hydrogen) v liquid (petrol/Sake)

Also, modifications would need to be made to stop oxidisation of engine parts if water was the source.

Sake wouldn't need this.
