'Mind-Reading' Device Could Revolutionize Video Games

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A convincing twin of Darth Vader stalks the beige cubicles of a Silicon Valley office, complete with ominous black mask, cape and light saber.

But this is no chintzy Halloween costume. It's a prototype, years in the making, of a toy that incorporates brain wave-reading technology.

Behind the mask is a sensor that touches the user's forehead and reads the brain's electrical signals, then sends them to a wireless receiver inside the saber, which lights up when the user is concentrating.

The player maintains focus by channeling thoughts on any fixed mental image, or thinking specifically about keeping the light sword on. When the mind wanders, the wand goes dark.

Pretty soon people are going to be playing Virtual Reality games and just using their thoughts to control the game.

Science has been advancing very fast lately.

Yeah sounds awesome!

I agree, it won't be long until they create something like the matrix where we plug in and all our senses are experienced in the brain inside a virtual world. Then someone will create a porn game where you can have sex and actually orgasm from it LOL. People won't come out of their homes!

However, we haven't really seen that much technology coming out since the creation of the internet... we hear about all the stuff they plan to release but it never does get released... seems like for the past 10 years nothing new has come out besides hydrogen cars which haven't really been phased in properly. I think they are keeping a lot of the technology from us for their own benefit, power and control.

Give it another 10 years though and we will probably see and experience some very exciting stuff!

This almost gave me goosebumps after reading the initial article. How sweet would that be if all we had to do was think and concentrate to play video games. This opens up tons of opportunities for gaming advancements in the future.

Check this link out though. It is a "game" of sorts that utilized biofeedback in order for you to advance to higher levels. It is endorsed by Deepak Chopra and Dr. Andrew Weil, who was recently on the Colbert Report, and has the user monitor and sustain certain levels of consciousness through controlled breating and mind focus.

This seems to be functioning on the same principals as the proposed biofeedback head receiver, and although it costs a fair bit more than your average video game, it would still be a blast to try.
