Man Jumped off Empire State Building

abcnews.go.com

NEW YORK Apr 13, 2007 (AP)— A man jumped to his death Friday out the window of a 69th-floor law office in the Empire State Building.

Police responded to the New York City landmark shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg covered in a gray sock on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor.

The tragedy in the 102-story building closed portions of the busy Midtown Manhattan street while the investigation continued.

Wow, that's nasty, seeing a severed leg in the street. Luckly, I haven't seen that yet.

He jumped from a law firm, I guess we don't know why yet.

The news ticker at the bottom of the screen said something about this, but it's not really making the news much. In the old days it would. IMUS is taking up all the air time. I wish it were the DUKE case ...

If I encountered a stray leg I would probably grab it and start randomly beating people with it. I can guarantee I wouldn't get charged with anything.

Tragic indeed, but doesn't this happen fairly often? Maybe not in this particular building, but surely in several around NYC.

I work two blocks from the Empire State Building. You get a couple of jumpers a year. This guy hit one of the roof areas of the building and his leg was severed in the fall.

Only about 2% of all successful suicides are done by jumping from a bridge or building.
www.suicide.org...

I can see why that would be so low, you would have to be very desperate to be able to overcome the fear of falling that distance. By far, the most common method in the US is the use of a firearm, followed by poisoning.

I think it's exceedingly rude to leave a big mess for other people to clean up. :shk:
But the jumpers always make the news.

He fails life and fails death too? Oh man. Thats sad. :shk:

He must of thought about it for a long time, then when he finally jumps he lives. :shk:

Tells all his family he is going to kill himself, then comes back with one leg.

I think many people stage a suicide in the hope that someone will notice.
It's really a cry for help.

People should take notice when a friend or family member starts talking about suicide, and act accordingly.
Seek advice, and try to help.

Did the guy leave a note? Maybe he was pushed, murdered, offed, snuffed, taken out, wacked or killed.

A lot of people really don't like lawyers!!

That the guy wasn't Al Sharpton, or Imus saying something about black people. It could have actually seen it on the news.

Is helping people commit suicide illegal. Helping as in, giving them ideas on how to kill themselves or suggesting that life is not worth living for them etc ??

They get away with it since they only "suggest" and provide information. They do not actively participate.

That's sad indeed, I wonder what subterfuge or despair drove him to it.

Oh lawdy's forgive me, but this calls to mind the horrific case of necrophilia in Toronto a few years ago. A woman jumped from a building to her death several storied below.

A man who witnessed the event, ran over and sexually assaulted her battered but intact corpse.

Talk about, opportunism - I'm not sure what his line of work was, but I hope it was not mortician. He had not yet achieved full citizen status - which just goes to show:
Immigration screening should include a test for proclivity to necrophilia.
