Cheney reasserts al-Qaida-Saddam connection

www.msnbc.msn.com

Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions of al-Qaida links to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq on Thursday as the Defense Department released a report citing more evidence that the prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.

Cheney contended that al-Qaida was operating in Iraq before the March 2003 invasion led by U.S. forces and that terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was leading the Iraqi branch of al-Qaida. Others in al-Qaida planned the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The argument that the administration implicitly conflated Iraq and Al-Qaeda is compelling. But after reading the words in this article, it seemed to me that he was saying that Al-Qaeda was "operating in Iraq," but he didn't say anything about government involvement. Am I the only one here seeing this verbal footwork?

The article specifically states "prewar gov did NOT cooperate with the terrorist group", and Cheney keeps saying otherwise - I guess you really do start believing your own lies after a while.....
I cannot believe he is still trying to convince people of a connection. He has completely lost touch with reality.

Not at all, the whole thing is a sneaky, underhanded game. By saying al qaeda was operating IN Iraq, he is making a true statement AND leading the weak minded into believing there was a Saddam connection. Kind of like saying that there are al quaeda operatives here in america, and linking them to Bush - hmmm, maybe that last statment isn't so far off the mark............

I know what you mean, but according to this article he was not drawing a direct connection between the government and Al-Qaeda. I don't think he ever did. I think, however, that they are playing a dirty game of language.

I don't know. Personally, any evidence that is brought up by either Bush or Chenny at this point is moot and pretty much political posturing. What Chenny is trying to do is get congress to agree with the president and try to get them to leave their current line of action and thought. Consider this, the country and the world was in short lied to by the Bush adminstration about the reasons to go into Iraq, and now we are stuck. He is trying to justify those reasons and get the country and more importantly, the congress back to supporting the president. Problem is neither party wants to play nicely with the other.

If there was a connection,
We wouldnt still be trying to validate it, after 4 yrs.

We have occupied Iraq and LET alqeada in.
What people need to understand is Alqaeda isnt like a pool of 1000's of ppl in the mountains.

Its a definition, its a moral understanding.
If your willing to make jihda against the Infidel, your part of alqaeda.

I urge people to watch a documentary called ' power of nightmares '
Alqaeda is merely a mindset.

And we fueld it in Iraq by invading.

BEFORE the 03 invasion, Saddam didnt allow that sort of mentality. It was saddams way, or the other way.
